Memory as a part of cognition has a direct correlation with the psychological functioning of the human brain. Even though there are many experiments concerning the memory’s nature, this complicated process requires more detailed investigation. In order to encourage subsequent research on this topic, the literature evaluation is necessary to formulate the question of interest. The exploration of different types of literature concerning the psychological aspects of memory will help to explore this topic in detail. The current paper includes reviewing the three types of articles on memory: empirical research, literature review, and explanation of the educational practice.
Haj, E., & Miller, R. (2018). Destination memory: The relationship between memory and social cognition. Psychological Research, 82, 1027–1038.
The first article focuses on analyzing destination memory and its correlations with social cognition. The researchers developed the “destination memory framework (DMF), in which destination memory contributes to the uniqueness of a communications episode” (Haj & Miller, 2018 p. 2). The article highlights the essential role of social cognition in the process of memory, thereby exploring the nature of this notion. Thus, the paper is relevant for the chosen category because it examines memory in terms of psychology.
Within the work, researchers presented the mixed method approach to examining the cognitive aspects of memory through developing the destination memory framework (Haj & Miller, 2017). Using the numerical representation of the participants’ results, the researchers calculated the dependence of the memory and theory of mind in the process of recalling the interlocutors (Haj & Miller, 2017). Moreover, the researchers applying the subsequent tests realized that stereotypes and figured that emotions influence all types of memory, including the destination one. Therefore, the authors of the article, thanks to developed DMF, proved that destination memory is directly connected with social cognition.
The article can be helpful in memory-related education due to the combination of a detailed literature overview and empirical research. The authors provided an extensive description of the destination memory, which allows readers to learn more about this type of memory. The DMF practical appliance revealed some socially conditioned peculiarities of the destination memory. Such factors open the subsequent discussion about memory psychology, which is quite relevant for the educational process. Moreover, the authors provided many terms of cognition theory that are appropriately described. The article not only offers valuable theoretical insights on the problem but also provides the results of practical research. Therefore, the paper has educational potential and can be applied in practice.
Alanis, A., Arana-Daniel, N., Lopez-Franco, A., Lopez-Franco, C., & Lopez-Franco, M. (2018). Emotional system in complex cognitive activities of working memory: A literature review of its role.Integr. Neurosci., 13(4), 679–693.
The second article is devoted to analyzing the emotions within the system of memories. The authors of the article stated that literature review contributes to determining the extent to which “working memory engages the cortical regions” (Alanis et al., 2018, p. 1). The article is unique from the perspective of analyzing the neuropsychological and molecular evidence of the connection between emotions and working memory (Alanis et al., 2018). Therefore, the article suits the chosen category because it reveals memory processing at the molecular level with psychological correlations.
The researchers analyzed the papers of outstanding psychologists and neurobiologists who provided an extensive description of the term working memory. This type of memory is considered one of the essential ones because it is responsible for the executive functions, such as choosing the prevalent focus of attention and information storage (Alanis et al., 2018). Working memory is involved in most of the cognitive processes of the human brain. The researchers pointed out that the prefrontal cortex is responsible for working memory regulation (Alanis et al., 2018). At the same time, the emotions associated with cognitive activities were also found in this part of the brain (Alanis et al., 2018). Based on these facts, the authors of the article supposed that the emotions observed in the different regions of the brain, such as the hypothalamus or amygdala, influence the working memory volume and functioning (Alanis et al., 2018). As a result of the literature review, researchers stated that there is a direct correlation of the experienced emotion with the working memory and other cognitive processes.
The article can be used for educational purposes because it extensively analyzes the working memory insights. The authors addressed and explained cognitive and neurological terms, broadening the students’ outlook on memory. The paper is unique in terms of education because it analyzes the possible interaction of psychology and neurophysiology. Such work can be used in teaching to provoke emotions. As far as some feelings ensure better memory functioning, the teacher can use this information to improve the memorizing speed. The article offers also can be used to broaden the terminological base of students in terms of the human brain and cognition theory. Moreover, this article can be used in medical education to understand neuropsychiatric disorders’ nature better. As far as such disorders like autism, schizophrenia, depression, and others are connected with memory and emotions, in-depth analysis can encourage treatment opportunities (Alanis et al., 2018). Therefore, the article can be used in the medical and cognition educational directions.
Cogdill, M., Nairne, J., & VanArsdall, J. (2017). Remembering the living: Episodic memory is tuned to animacy.Current Directions in Psychological Science, 26(1), 22–27.
The third article is devoted to developing the theory of cognition and applying the animate memory associating processing in practice (Cogdill et al., 2017). The article focuses on the theoretical exploration of memory and cognition. Moreover, the authors provided an educational program and future implementations of the stated practice. Thus, the article is directly correlated with the topic of memory, providing the practical appliance of the gained data. The paper also treats memory from the psychologically conditioned cognitive process, and thereby it is relevant to the subtopic of the current work.
The article’s main point is that the animate and inanimate stimuli are essential in forming episodic memory. Conducting the analysis of the neurophysiological peculiarities of the brain responses, researchers stated that memory is oriented on psychological associations (Cogdill et al., 2017). The authors addressed the psychological friend-foe concept’s role in-memory processing (Cogdill et al., 2017). Thus, they estimated memory as a part of cognition in relation to psychological features. The strong point of the research is that the authors outlined animacy’s usage to adjust the memory volume (Cogdill et al., 2017). The practical application of this method can be seen in education. Researchers provided a foreign-language learning program based on the animacy concept (Cogdill et al., 2017). According to the author’s developments, memory works efficiently when education starts with the animate agents (Cogdill et al., 2017). The innovative animacy concept of memory also can be used for seeking treatment for damaged cognitive processes.
The described article can be efficiently used for educational purposes. For example, this information will be valuable for students exploring defectology or teaching. Besides the extensive theoretical base, the article provides a practical educational program for foreign-language learning which can be applied per se. The paper can be used as a theoretical base and as a practical guide for educational purposes. It also encourages the subsequent exploration of the role of the animacy concept in cognition and memory. Thus, students can also be interested in this question and explore this topic further on.
