Ambiguity and Conflict in Nursing Roles in Critical Care
In modern times, the role of nurses is significant because they are responsible for caring for patients and their families. Nurses often face role ambiguity and role conflict, for example, when they move from the place of a nurse providing care in the ward to the role of a nurse in the intensive care ward. Nurses need to constantly improve their level of knowledge and experience as medical care progresses and requires a change of roles, which in turn generates ambiguity.
Balancing the Biomedical Model with Holistic Nursing
Conflict in the work of intensive care nurses occurs when specialists are exposed to conflicting opinions and beliefs, which has a particularly acute effect on the work of nurses in the conditions of care and patient care. Role ambiguity also deprives nurses of clarity and certainty regarding the biomedical model of care and holistic care for patients and families (Kapusuz, 2019). From the example of personal experience, I can note that in intensive care, there are specific protocols for nurses’ actions that the biomedical model of care prescribes. Still, it often may not consider the individual characteristics of each patient, which causes conflict and uncertainty.
Societal Trends Contributing to Family Caregiver Stress and Burden
Social trends played a significant role in the emergence of ambiguity and conflicts in the roles of nurses, which increased stress and burden on the family caring for children. Such trends include non-compliance with self-care habits, the financial situation of some families, and, as a result, a lack of proper care for their health and well-being. In addition, the lack of education of patients in terms of caring for their physical and mental health also brought negative results. It gave rise to ambiguity in the roles of nurses (Kapusuz, 2019). Family stress arises precisely because of the lack of knowledge and financial opportunities for quality child care, which increases the moral and physical burden on families.
