The military services all advertise different aspect of programs and benefit. When trying to decide, the best way is through research. That research can be through friends and family that have served, reading up on the different services, or just picking one because that recruiting office is the closest. The United States Army is the best out of all the services.

The first reason the U.S. Army is the best among all the services is that it allows people to pick the job field they want. The jobs that people can enlist for depends on certain criteria which I will expand upon. One is the General Technical score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. This score is based on 130 point system. (Army.com). The higher the score, the better selection of job are offered.

Anyone trying to join the U.S. Army that wants to work a job in Military Intelligence must have a GT score of 110 or better. (AKO, Sept 2008). Second is a person’s criminal history. They can not only limit the jobs people can enlist for, they can also be a factor as whether the military will allow people to join. Lastly, whether a person received a high school diploma or GED will affect the length of the job list. Once a person has been met the criteria for the job they would like to do, they may receive a surprise. If they qualify for certain jobs, there are enlistment bonuses available once they complete all required training for that job. It varies based on how long you enlist for, but currently it caps out at $40,000 (Army.com).

The second reason is the promotion rate is faster that the other services. In the U.S. Army, it can take an individual as little as three years to make the rank of Sergeant (E-5). This is the first rank that people start getting evaluated in their leadership abilities and they are given younger soldiers to be in charge of. The other services can take four or more years to achieve the rank of E-5.

The final reason the U.S. Army is the best service is the experience that you can receive. All the services have their own elite fighters, but they are not able to get as much training as the U.S. Army. The U.S. Army has training programs that only they conduct. If there are open spots, other services can take full advantage of learning from the U.S. Army. This list of training programs include, but is not limited to: Air Assault, Airborne, Pathfinder, and Green Berets.

Air Assault is learning hand and arm signals so you can direct a helicopter. Training also includes how to hook cargo to a helicopter so it can be air lifted safely along with rappelling from a hovering helicopter. Airborne consists of safely jumping from a moving plane about 1,000 feet above the ground in both day and night situations.

Pathfinder is another U.S. Army school. “The mission of the U.S. Army Pathfinder School is to provide a three week course in which the student navigates dismounted, establishes and operates a day/night helicopter landing zone, establishes and operates a day/night CARP, GMRS, and Army VIRS parachute DZ, conducts sling load operations, provides air traffic control and navigational assistance to RW and FW airborne operations. Students participate in a three day FTX as a member of a Pathfinder Team.”(Pathfinder, 2008). Regardless of the training you receive, the lifetime friends you make while you are in the U.S. Army are invaluable.

In conclusion, the United Stated Army is the best out of all the services. It allows people to pick the job field they would like, it has a higher promotion rate than the other services, and the overall experience from training is unparalleled.

Peer Response Checklist

Directions: Use the checklist below for your peer reviews. Please copy and paste the paper you are reviewing below the checklist. Keep in mind that this assignment is graded and that your grade will be determined by how detailed your review is. A best practice is to provide a detailed explanation for each answer–approximately a paragraph.

Not required, but strongly suggested: Use Track Changes to add your comments and suggestions to the appropriate areas in the paper.

1. Writer’s Name
Peer B
2. What is the type and purpose of this paper?
This is a persuasive essay which intends to explain to the readers, the benefits of US Army services with the objective of persuading the audience to choose the same.

What is the thesis of this paper? Does it reflect the topic and purpose of the paper?

The essay’s thesis is that the US Army is the best out of all services. It does reflect the topic and purpose of the essay; however it sounds too abrupt. A little bit of elaboration is required for the introduction which would help the reader to understand the thesis better.

What is the biggest problem area of the paper? (Organization, development of ideas, grammar, punctuation, etc.) Explain your answer.

The essay looks fine in terms of organization, and development of ideas. The writer also remains focused on the central theme of the essay without deviating from it and embellishing it with redundant details. The main problem with the essay is an abundance of grammatical errors among which the disagreement of noun and verb is the most pressing concern. Here are some examples:

Paragraph 2: Jobs – depends

Selection – are

Criminal history – they

Other concerns are:

  • Switch in the point of view (POV) from third person in the third paragraph (individual) to second person (you) in the fourth paragraph. The writer needs to stay consistent with the POV.
  • There are some typos (‘that” instead of “than” in the third paragraph) which need to be fixed. A thorough proofreading/editing is suggested to fix all such inconsistencies.

What is the biggest strength of the paper? Explain your answer.

The author has managed to explain the benefits of US Army service to the audience in clear and precise terms.

The writer gives specific information about important aspects like compensation packages, promotional avenues, training and development opportunities which are ample to provide the reader a complete idea about the benefits one derives from joining the US Army.

What material doesn’t seem to fit the main point or the audience? Are all of the topic sentences points of the thesis? Are all of the support sentences facts, examples, reasons, etc. to explain the topic sentence? If not, which need revision?

The essay is devoid of any irrelevant details, and it does not deviate from the thesis. All the topic sentences contain only points related to the thesis and the support sentences consist of information that are directly pertinent to the central idea of the essay.

At what point does the paper fail to hold the reader’s interest? Where should more details or examples be added? Why? If the paper has good detail, point out these areas, too.

The essay is short and concise and at no stage it distracts the audience, except for the grammatical errors and a few usage/sentence structure issues, which can be fixed.

However, though the author recapitulates the essay quite well in the conclusion, it would be a good idea to flesh it out a bit more, as in the case of the introduction.

Where is the organization confusing? What suggestions do you have for the writer? If the writing is well-organized, describe how the writer accomplished the organization.

The essay is organized in a fairly good manner. The author has managed this by selecting relevant topic sentences in the proper sequence which explain necessary aspects that support the thesis.

If this assignment requires APA formatting, are there any errors in the parenthetical documentation or the References page? If so, please point out these specific areas. If the paper does not require references, please just write NA (Not Applicable) in the space below.

In APA style, it is necessary to mention author’s name (surname first and then first name) while acknowledging a source.

The publication year should be put in parenthesis in the sequence: Year, month and date.

The title should be in italics, then a colon and subtitle in italics.

The home page of the URL (publisher) should be indicated after that.

The author needs to consult APA manual 5th edition and resolve these problems.
