The women’s environment and development organization is a global organization that is dedicated to the uplifting of the living standards of women. It began taking form in the 1990s but got official legal recognition in the year 1991.It was registered in New York City and this serves as the headquarters till now. The leadership of the organization is inclusive of all ethnic groups and its presence is felt in most continents. It is more active in the western part of Africa, North America and South America.
The purpose of the organization is to ensure that women are given a voice. The organization does in this in a number of ways. First, the organization carries out its own research in different parts of the world to establish what is good for women. This research is then made available to policy makers in both the public and private domains so that the needs of women are taken into consideration. Apart from that, the organization has its internal programs whose aim is to assist needy women access soft loans so as to open businesses and gain financial empowerment. A third way in which this organization gives women a voice is through advocacy. This takes the format of issuing statements in support of abused women and being part of demonstrations that are meant to make policy makers listen to the voices of millions of women who are living in subhuman conditions around the world. In addition to this, this organization has programs that are used to give information to women on how they can seek help for the various problems they face in society. Lastly, the organization partners with other organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank so as to carry out projects that benefit women.
I decided to write on this organization because of the kind of work it does for the betterment of the lives of women around the globe. It is inspiring to see an organization that takes the interests of women so seriously. The impact of its activities in African and South American countries is evident. The victims of wars as well as the women affected by poverty and diseases such as HIV/AIDS are continually being given assistance either through information of economic empowerment by this organization. I have a feeling that with sufficient resources, this organization has the potential to transform the lives of women on a global scale. Another inspiring factor about this organization is the partnership is has forged with other organizations such as the United Nations for the purpose of advancing the rights of women especially in the developing world.
In connection to the content covered in class, this organization serves to push for the rights of women in a number of ways. First, it does this through economic empowerment. It also does this through the supply of information to the women as well as the advocacy that it carries out. This advocacy makes the various players in the field of policy to listen to the cries of women while making policies and this has led to the inclusion of women in the drafting of national policies. This is also true for the drafting of international policies in the area of global organizations such as the United Nations as well as nations that have global concerns for women such as the United States.
