Think Before Judge: Rhetorical Analysis of Image

Rhetorical Situation

The purpose of this image is to show that not everything is always clear, namely, that an evil person can be hidden behind a pleasant appearance and vice versa. The audience to which this image is directed is as diverse as the object itself, that is, both a child and an adult can understand the meaning of the hidden one. The theme of this image is the relationship with people and the correct positioning of oneself as a person. Many people, like the author of the work, have faced similar situations so it will be close to everyone. The context of the work is to show that the world is not as unambiguous as it seems at first glance.

Ethos

The image shows a dialogue between a man and a little girl, namely, the man gives her a flower. However, the man looks brutal, and not everyone perceives such a good appearance. At the same time, the girl is standing in a sundress and rejoices at the gift. The main twist of the image is that the shadows show the absolute opposite of the appearance of the characters. This suggests that it is incorrect to analyze a person only by an appearance from an ethical point of view. Although the girl looks cute, her shadow looks sinister, and also with a man, his shadow breathes kindness, which cannot be said initially about appearance.

Pathos

The primary way to evoke emotions in the viewer is the paradoxical nature of the image, namely the presentation of the ambiguity of the world in understanding the appearance and relationships between people. People look at the pictures and ask the initial question of what exactly the author wanted to show, then they know that this is the ambiguity of the world. The author openly shows the injustice of judgment on external signs, such as the type of hairstyle and skin color.

Logos

The concept of logos refers to the application of logic and common sense in the creation of persuasive literature or rhetoric. The reason for this image lies in the fact that there is a natural essence behind each person and their external signs, which is not always combined with outward motions. An example is a man and a girl who is having a dialogue, and their inner essences are projected behind them, which contrasts with their appearance.
