Realistic Job previews

Realistic Job preview is a type of device used by personnel managers to evaluate and provide information to potential job applicants in order to get the positive and the negative aspect of the work or job they will perform. This process of job preview helps employees and the employer to bond properly through psychological contract. The use of job previews enables the employees to fit in a company or organization with the knowledge of what the company will offer, for example company norms, remuneration, entry hours and schedule flexibility (Breaugh, 2003). It also stipulates what the employees will provide to the company (customer relations, lateness to work, risks in work and stress).

Where companies use this system of realistic job preview, the personnel manager and other recruiting persons end up receiving high turnover of new recruits, because the employees have a slight idea, if not the whole setting of the company (Breaugh,2003). This general idea of the company is very important to the new employees. For example if the employees get the job expecting an overtime allowance or wage for the weekends and holidays, after that they are denied these allowances , it jeopardizes the trust between them and the employer and also breaches the psychological contract. If the candidates are informed earlier, it saves them time and energy, rather than pursuing a career which will not fit their conditions. It is not only important to the interviewees but also to the hiring team, since they only interview candidates who have the highest chances of succeeding. Realistic job previews should take many aspects such as: videos, short tests and testimonials, regardless of the format one takes, the job preview should focus on the most important things that matter to the candidate (Breaugh, 2003).

There are however some drawbacks in using this system in interviews. The use of realistic job preview might give the employees a negative view of the company, but actually it might be the opposite while one is a member of the company (Breaugh, 2003). This does not relate well with the company either, since the company ends up loosing very qualified and productive candidates due to the negative perception of the job preview. It is also to the disadvantage of the company since the management must dig in to their financial coffers so that they can perform this activity.

Realistic job preview faces challenges such as: some recruiters do not share enough information during interviews, the shared information may not be clear and therefore misunderstood, and finally the candidates do not ask the appropriate questions.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is the intimidation in work places or false promises in exchange for sexual favors. Such deeds in organizations or companies are not tolerated in the governments or states. This vice usually occurs in different forms and they are: seduction, individual annoyance and finally physical attack. Many companies have come up with measures to overcome this vice and also preventing employees from undergoing the same. This type of sexual abuse may occur in many circumstances i.e. the person being harassed is in a junior position than the one who is intimidating him / her. The various forms of harassment are as listed below:

  • The harasser can be of the same sex.
  • The harasser can be unaware he/she is doing an offensive act or may be unaware that the deeds he/she is performing are illegal.
  • The victim of the offence can be of any age, gender or race; this is also same to the harasser.
  • It is not only the employer who can be a sexual harasser but also clients, work mates and friends may fall in this category of sexual intimidators.

Sexual harassment is always deemed as a secret in the society and if the victims speak out, they are termed as trouble makers or even prostitutes. In other terms the victim usually becomes the accused and hence becomes an outlaw in the society. In such cases the victim falls under serious scrutiny and risks hostility and segregation from employers, colleagues and friends.

The effects of sexual harassment can be very fatal to the victim depending on the individual’s strength and the duration of the harassment. This type of harassment causes the victim to suffer psychological trauma and even physical injuries; furthermore it can lead to loss of job or even jeopardizing the individual status in the community. This vice does not only affect individuals but also the company’s productivity is reduced due to predominant team conflict.

How to Cub Sexual Harassment

Companies should accept that this vice is real in work places and should come up with laws to counter sexual harassment at work. The companies’ management should ensure that there is good working environment which will not favor sexual harassers (Breaugh, 2003). For example many companies in the United States have adopted a code of conduct for gender justice in work places which helps to eradicate sexual harassment.
