Introduction
The aviation sector in the United States comprises a vast network of companies that collectively contribute to making air travel possible. The backbone of this system is the primary and national carriers, each with its own unique history and distinct characteristics. In contrast to national carriers, which operate exclusively within a single country, major carriers often span multiple regions. The three most well-known airlines in the world are American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, a primary carrier, and Southwest Airlines, the national one.
History and Structure
The founding of national carriers can be traced back to the earliest days of aviation, when governments recognized the need to establish their own airlines to further national interests. The Air Mail Act of 1925 in the United States formalized this concept, paving the way for the establishment of airlines like American Airways and United Air Lines (National Air and Space Museum, 2021). These companies are examples of how rapidly the aviation industry is evolving, morphing into key players.
The fleet of a typical U.S. national carrier includes planes that can fly both domestic and international routes. For both domestic and international flights, a national airline like American Airlines is vital. National airlines connect major cities throughout the world via a complex network of routes, serviced by their varied fleets of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. They have a comprehensive network of routes that link major cities and hubs throughout the world, meeting the demands of passengers and freighters of all shapes and sizes.
Many major carriers use the ‘hub and spoke’ network architecture. Utilizing this method, planes will converge at a central hub, and passengers will board connecting flights (spokes) from there to their ultimate destination (Borhani et al., 2020). The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport hub of American Airlines is a prime example of this.
The concept enhances productivity by allowing airlines to centralize vital resources at key nodes, thereby simplifying connections and maximizing routes. Point-to-point airlines, such as Southwest Airlines, don’t use a hub system but instead fly directly between cities. While “hub and spoke” networks are commonly used by many airlines, others, such as Southwest Airlines, prefer point-to-point networks. In an effort to simplify things, some airlines forgo the traditional hub-and-spoke arrangement in favor of direct flights between cities.
When it comes to air travel, regional airlines are as crucial as the big ones. These companies often have shorter lines that link secondary cities to key transportation nodes – SkyWest Airlines and ExpressJet are two such companies (Xu et al., 2020). Through capacity purchase agreements, regional airlines may expand the reach of their parent companies’ networks by offering feeder services.
Recent Changes
The US air transport sector has seen considerable transformations in recent years. The rapid expansion of low-cost airlines, such as Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways, has challenged traditional price and service patterns. Mergers and acquisitions within industries have also impacted the environment, as shown by the 2013 combination of American Airlines and US Airways (Xu et al., 2020). Adaptability to economic, technical, and consumer-driven advances is reflected in these alterations.
The extensive use of online booking systems, self-service kiosks, and mobile applications has further improved the passenger experience. The advent of digital technology has simplified processes and made traveling more convenient. Another noteworthy trend is the increasing investment in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft by airlines to reduce their carbon footprint and operational expenses.
