Introduction
The use of cell phones and social media starts differently for teenagers: some get access at the age of 8-9, and others only at 14-15. Questions about the acceptable age to start using social media continue to be relevant, as there is a connection between screen time and socialization. Parents have different approaches to whether or not it is acceptable to use social media at an early age. The earliest age to use social media (Facebook or Twitter) is 12-13.
Opinion
The best age to use social media is 12-13 years old because children are entering a new stage of communication at this age. They are developing a new bonding system that improves with media use. In addition, social media at this age can positively influence integration into new communities and in the transition to high school (Richter et al. 3). Social media become helpers for children: they learn how to construct their thoughts, build a point of view, and argue successfully. The age of 12-13 years is the best age to start using phones and social media because it will allow children to enter a new stage of life more easily.
Counterargument & Rebuttal
Some people believe that social media should be available to children as early as 7-10. This opinion is often justified by the fact that children need extra attention, and because of evolving technology, it is challenging to keep a child away from their phones. However, social media is not a toy; its primary purpose is to develop connections and communication. Use at an earlier age can adversely affect the psyche, and apps with child-friendly versions undermine teenagers’ confidence (Salgado 9). Before 12-13, children were weak in their advocacy and could rarely defend themselves in media, so they needed parental supervision and support.
Conclusion
The use of social media should start at age 12-13 when children can present their opinions and operate with arguments. In addition, the media help them socialize and build systems of connections: with friends or for learning. At an earlier age, access to social media is related to the need to occupy children’s free time, but it can have a negative impact on their mental state.
