A virtual machine (VM) is a program that allows a person to allocate part of their computer’s resources to a separate virtual computer. VMs expand the capabilities of the IT infrastructure by working on a different server, using the same resources (Mortensen, 2020). This is useful for software developers, web designers, as well as those who plan to upgrade to a new operating system (OS). In addition, these machines are vital for today’s network environment because they allow for testing a written code in various OSs and graphical environments without using separate computers for such procedures.
What is more, virtual machines are important to use because they double the performance – several tasks can be completed by a single computer in a shortened time. This is especially essential for organizations that use a network of computers. Visualization enables to separate one system from another, thereby putting an additional layer of security and ensuring no data leakage (Aloysius Navamani, 2018). Moreover, the overhead costs of power consumption arise when using multiple computers. VMs allow to reduce the energy waste and cut electricity-related expenses; this strategy is especially beneficial for preserving resources.
Ultimately, the virtual machine and all the data are easily transferred from one computer to another. Portable software for a virtual machine stores information in a single file (as a system image) on a physical computer (“Virtual machines,” 2019). This alleviates the process of transferring data in case a laptop is damaged or in any other situation. In the meantime, relocating a physical server requires extra effort. Therefore, portability, easy access, security, and lower costs are major criteria of virtual machines that are of great importance for contemporary networks since they ensure swift operations.
