Abortion, with a focus on its ethical and legal nature, is undoubtedly one of the most controversial and actively discussed issues in modern society. The main point of debate in this field is the dispute between pro-choice and pro-life positions. Although pro-choice views are supported in many democratic societies, and they are discussed as influencing women’s experiences positively, it is also important to defend the pro-life position and promote the prohibition of abortion because this act can be considered as murder, it is unethical, leading to physical and psychological complications, and affecting demographics and society negatively.
When speaking about the right to abortion, it is important to pay attention to the fact that the act of abortion is murder in its nature. Thus, abortion can be regarded as a direct killing of an unborn child who does not have the ability to defend itself. In this case, the decision is made only by a woman and her family, and this act can be viewed as a crime, no matter who is the victim (Swank 363-367). At the same time, many people believe that an individual’s life begins at conception, and thus, abortion should be banned in the name of preserving life (Blackshaw and Rodger 104-106). Everyone, including unborn children, has the right to life as well as to protection of their life, regardless of the stage of development, and laws in society should reflect this position by prohibiting abortion.
Even if abortion is not discussed as murder by many people, it would still be ethically unacceptable in modern society. The problem is that abortion is an act in which the subjective opinion of the parents or people around them outweighs the right of the unborn child to have life. In addition, many religions, such as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, also condemn abortion and consider this act as a sin (Block 34-42). According to Giebink, “the sad fact is that there will always be abortions performed, legal or not, unless we appeal to the heart” (45). Thus, people need to understand that their abortion-related actions are unethical and non-humanistic. Overall, it is important to state that abortion tends to violate ethical standards, as well as moral and religious principles, and it should be prohibited to provide more benefits for people.
One should also state that abortion can have critical physical and psychological consequences for women’s health. Some studies have shown that abortion can have numerous adverse physical and psychological or mental effects on women (Cosgrove 23; Mattalucci and De Zordo 676-680). In particular, it is known that abortion can lead to an increased risk of developing depression, anorexia, and other mental disorders in the future. In many cases, women cannot cope with their feelings and emotions after abortion, as well as with their feeling of guilt (Block 78-83). In addition, if abortion procedures are completed with medical errors, there are high risks that women will not have children in the future. Thus, the prohibition of abortion can provide some social protection to women and help them avoid these negative consequences.
It is also important to focus on the fact that the prohibition of abortion can prevent economic losses and have positive effects on demographics tendencies in modern states. Abortion is viewed as an expensive process in a healthcare industry, which can have a negative impact on society’s economy. The prohibition of abortion can potentially prevent decreased demographics rates and overcome potential economic losses (Block 118). From this perspective, prohibiting abortion can help society not only preserve more resources for investing in other projects but also generate more resources. The reason is that the prohibition of abortion can lead to the population growth in a country, influencing its economy positively.
There are also views that the prohibition of abortion can contribute to a greater respect for life. If abortion is prohibited, it is possible to expect that society will accept the idea that life is the most valuable thing, and more efforts should be made in order to protect it. It is important to promote pro-life ideas in order to accentuate the value of the life of not only unborn children but also all members of society (Block 22; Swank 364). There are many alternatives to abortion that can be used to support the life and well-being of both a mother and a child. They include family planning, sexual education, and family support programs that can help prevent or cope with unwanted pregnancies (Block 112; Giebink 82-94). This approach is essential to build positive and ethical relations in communities to guarantee their growth, development, and prosperity.
In conclusion, it can be said that abortion should be prohibited for the protection of life, ethical conduct promotion, physical and psychological well-being of women, preservation of economic resources, and respect for life. In this context, the pro-life position explains all the advantages of prohibiting abortion. If the pro-life position is widely accepted by society and abortion becomes a prohibited act, it is possible to expect the economic and moral development of society. Despite the fact that the debate over prohibiting abortion is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, it is important to protect this specific stance and demonstrate its advantages for society.
