“The Necklace” is deservedly considered one of the most famous and successful short stories by Guy de Maupassant. The author skillfully explores essential themes such as wealth, pride, and suffering, making the piece engaging to read. I definitely liked the story because of the well-developed plot, the character’s bright features, and an unexpected and sudden ending that presents a significant lesson to the audience.

A few specific reasons explain why I believe that “The Necklace” is a good story. First, the well-developed plot fascinated me because it was interesting to read about Mathilde Loisel, who tried to escape reality and become rich (de Maupassant, n.d.). It was also instructive to see how her desire to appear wealthy brought the family into trouble and massive debt, as it took the Loisels 10 years to repay the cost of the lost diamond necklace (de Maupassant, n.d.).

Second, I enjoyed the author’s approach to describing the story’s protagonist. Mathilde was jealous and simple-minded since she only drew attention to material objects. That is why wearing the diamond necklace made her feel excited and thrilled (de Maupassant, n.d.).

Third, I was surprised and astonished by the story’s sudden ending. When it became clear that the necklace had been a fake and that the Loisels had not needed to run into enormous debt, I was shocked (de Maupassant, n.d.). Thus, the literary work teaches that people should not be obsessed with wealth.

In conclusion, I liked “The Necklace” because it was interesting and informative to read. Furthermore, Guy de Maupassant did his best to make the short story a masterpiece in multiple details. The plot, well-developed protagonist, and unexpected ending are among the best features of the given literary piece. That is why I will obviously recommend reading this story to everyone who is interested in literature.
