Introduction
William Dorsey Swann, also known as “The Queen,” was a prominent figure in the late 19th-century LGBTQ+ community. Born into slavery in 1858, he was also the first known American activist to lead a resistance group for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. He is also considered to be one of the first drag queens in the United States. His activism helped to lay the foundation for future LGBTQ+ rights movements.

On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed all enslaved people in the District of Columbia. This was a crucial moment in the abolition of slavery in the United States, and it demonstrated the growing support for the abolition of slavery. While these two events may seem unrelated, they were significant developments in the fight for equality and justice in the United States. The activism of William Dorsey Swann and the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act both illustrate the ongoing struggle for marginalized communities to secure their rights and dignity.

He later rose to prominence as the first queer resistance group leader in America, using his platform to promote LGBTQ+ rights and combat prejudice and oppression (Verma, 2022).
Legacy of Activism and Resistance
Although Swann’s activism occurred in a much different time and context than today, his legacy inspires and informs LGBTQ+ rights movements. His boldness in openly defying societal norms and fighting for LGBTQ+ equality set the stage for future activists to build upon.
