The news is about a woman sexually harassed on a New York City subway, and no one helped her (Conklin). The video of the assault went viral on social media. The news article also reveals that transit crime incidents have increased by 58% compared to the previous year (Conklin). In addition, total violent crimes increased by 39% over the year. The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, did not respond to the questions of a Fox News reporter. Regarding the subway, NYPD Transit Chief Jason Wilcox announced that starting this month, the Train Patrol Force would be initiated to control the stations. The article states that in the nearest future, the number of crimes in both the city and subway would be decreased as the police is working on the issues.
I chose this news article as I found that spreading information regarding the crimes is crucial to preserving the safety of a nation. People should be aware of the crimes that were committed in their city. They should be allowed to demand protection from the police. It is critical for the people in society to know what is happening around them and that they are safe from such situations. Moreover, I think that the Train Patrol Force is a valuable body that would help to avoid crimes in the future and make the citizens of New York feel safe. The news article also shows that today people are self-centered, and they are not willing to help others in a hardship situation. The government must mitigate this to make people more humane and kinder. I also think that addressing the issues like harassment in public places would increase people’s awareness regarding crimes and that they will be careful. Due to this, some potential criminals would not commit crimes as they will know that their behavior will be posted on social media. With regards to the harassment of woman, it is not new that women are being assaulted in public places, and it should be stopped and well-controlled. Women are weak as opposed to men, and they cannot stand for themselves. If people continue to not respond to such terrible incidents, we will have a cruel society that does not care about the violence around. As a result, there will be no rules and chaos that would destroy the order and lead to numerous victims. Therefore, government officials need to address the issue of harassment and provide some explanations for people. Values, such as kindness, love, and support, should be constantly reminded to the states.
I am surprised that no one helped the woman avoid being sexually harassed. People were just standing there and looking at the horrible scene. This says that our society lacks kindness and needs to learn how to be a human being. The government may rely on our religion to make people closer to each other and develop empathy. I also was surprised that the mayor of New York City did not respond to the situation. I think any government official should be responsive to the issues and be able to answer all the questions of the public. Yet, I liked the fact that now the subway would have its police to prevent crimes and assault.
