Introduction

To begin with it would be necessary to mention, that now, at the beginning of the 21st century, we still can not judge the lives of the people who lived at the beginning of the 20th century objectively. It is used to consider that we live in the democratic society and have the access to the whole information and data related to that period, but we can not be sure, that the access is full, or all the key facts are known or open for the wide access. It is hard to compare the life in some particular region, as all the students are taught to think globally now, but I would like to choose Eastern Europe, as the region subjected to crucial and sufficient changes throughout the 20th century.

Discussion

Pessimistic angle

The brief summary of the selected region shows that the people experienced two world wars, the threat of the totalitarian regimes (German Nazis, and Italian Fascists), the socialistic revolutions, the consequences of the Cold War, the consequences of the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the echoes of the Arab-Israeli conflicts etc. This list may be prolonged for several pages.

The fact of the terrorist attacks should also be taken into account. As the history shows, the attacks of the beginning of the 20th century were aimed particularly against the leaders, monarchs, officers etc. This can be observed on the example of the bombing of Franz-Ferdinand, the Austria-Hungarian archduke by the Serbian extremist group “the black arm”. But nowadays all the attacks are aimed to make the innocent people suffer, as the character of Islamic terrorism shows that that struggle against non-Islamic world is led, and nobody can feel secure. Even, if the attacks have not touched upon the Eastern European region yet, it in no way means that the citizens are insured.

Optimistic angle

Though, not everything is as bad as it may seem. The totalitarian regimes have been eliminated, and the democracy is developing. It should be pointed, that it is rather young and still can not guarantee the full freedom for the citizens, but the Velvety Revolutions have succeeded in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.

Another optimistic point is the development of medical science, and the enhancement of surgery as Soviet scientists have made great contribution to it in the spheres of cardiology, ophthalmology and oncology – the sphere of the most dangerous and wide spread deceases of the past times.

The progress in the medical science is integrally linked with the Technical revolutions, as the heavy industry productions have become safer as for the factory workers, so for the citizens, as the new technologies for the production have been implemented.

Conclusion

In the conclusion it would be necessary to emphasize, that the people themselves create the world they live in, and in order to compare the different places o epochs for the security we need to experience the times ourselves, as Clyo – the nymph of the history proved to be rather subjective, and sometimes very unfair.
