Biblical stories are filled with an amazing suitability for analogy with present day life. Many aspects and mysteries of the life we live today can be explained by stories in the bible. It is therefore important to be reading the bible analytically while relating the circumstances and culminations of the biblical stories with the life we are living today.
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah tells of the Sexual immorality that was characteristic of the people living there. The Bible tells of how the Lord was angered by the sexual sins of these people that he decided to destroy the land. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were involving themselves in very kind of sexual sin ranging from adultery, fornication, sodomy etcetera. It is even evident in the bible that they were so deeply attached to sodomy that men would prefer fellow men over women virgins. For instance, when angels were sent by God to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, the sons of Sodom and Gomorrah, both young and old, wanted to take them from Lot and sleep with them. Lot offered his two daughters, who were virgins, to them for them to spare the angels but they wanted the “men”. The angels saved Lot from the sons of Sodom who wanted to punish him for denying them to the angels by blinding the men. Considering these happenings, it is evident that Sodom and Gomorrah were a rotten society in terms of morals and the Lord had every reason to destroy them.
This story explains the current immorality levels in the world today. We are living in a society in which adultery and fornication is taken as heroism and homosexuality and heterosexuality is widely accepted in the society. The sons of Sodom and Gomorrah, kind of, set a precedent for the gay community. It explains why the gay community is growing every day and gay marriage is either already legalized or it is in the process of being legalized in a lot of countries in the world. It is therefore important that we learn from the precedent of Sodom and Gomorrah. We should consider God’s “ruling” in that case and make informed decisions. In fact, the fire punishment of God on the people of Sodom and Gomorrah with fire is parallel to the current repercussions of sexual immorality like the incurable HIV virus. HIV can be considered to be the punishment of God for sexual immorality. The saving of Lot from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is also characterized with several parallels with present day life. Lot was living in Sodom but he was saved from its destruction because he was righteous. In life today, if one is not involved in sexual immorality, they will be obviously saved from the punishment of God, which is HIV and AIDS. It is not stated in the bible if Lot’s wife was not as righteous as Lot but her looking back at Sodom was a substantial indication that she was missing something in Sodom. With this argument therefore, the Lord wanted to save her due to the righteousness of Lot. This means that, if we are sexually pure, the Lord will not only protect us but he will also protect those in our lives due to our sexual purity. It is therefore important for us to refrain ourselves from sexual immorality so that the favor and protection of God will be upon us and the people close to us.
