Research Focus
It is essential to appreciate and respect the culture and heritage not only of one’s ethnic group but also of others. African Americans are an integral part of the history of the United States and occupy a vital link in its social structure. It always seemed that I had insufficient information or that stereotypes about this ethnic group subconsciously guided me. In order to change things for the better, I aim to explore African Americans in as much detail as possible in my final research project.
Annotated Bibliography
Anya, Uju. 2020. “African Americans in World Language Study: The Forged Path and Future Directions.” Annual Review of Applied Linguistics 40:97–112.
This article examines the history of African Americans in the United States through the lens of language and touches on ethnic education issues (Anya, 2020). The author provides statistical data to outline this group’s current and future patterns of educational development. The study is constructed from the survey method of the inquiry on African Americans and offers an overview of the influence of race on second language acquisition. Thus, the author combines the historical and educational aspects of the experience of the ethnic group.
The study results show a decrease in African Americans’ participation level in language programs. It indicates a distorted understanding of who should be given development opportunities in the field of interest. The research will be helpful for my final project because the given data can be used to describe the socio-cultural situation of African Americans in the USA. In addition, by connecting the results of this study with the trends of racial bias in the United States, I can identify manifestations of discrimination in educational institutions.
Henry Akintobi, Tabia, et al. 2020. “Community Engagement of African Americans in the Era of Covid-19: Considerations, Challenges, Implications, and Recommendations for Public Health.” Preventing Chronic Disease 17.
The article provides insight into the impact of the ethnoracial aspect on the healthcare system using the example of the COVID-19 pandemic period (Henry Akintobi et al., 2020). In addition, the author considers this issue from the point of view of the historical context and the state of mental health of the group. This study is presented as a project report and contains examples of COVID-19 response strategies driven by community-based participatory research. The article’s primary purpose is to inform about the interconnectedness of historical, political, and clinical factors in the vulnerability of African Americans to COVID-19.
In my final research project, I can use this information to analyze the physical and mental health status of an ethnic group and examine the root causes of the respective indicators. In addition, it is possible to outline future ways of changing healthcare policy. Moreover, I can identify differences in healthcare provision for White and African Americans.
Wilson, George. 2020. “African American Access to Management Post‐1990: A Review and Critique of Existing Sociological Research.” Sociology Compass 14(12):1–10.
The study touches on the themes of social stratification of African Americans, prejudice, and discrimination in the workplace (Wilson, 2020). From a global aspect, the article criticizes the inaccessibility of this ethnic group in occupying managing positions. The study is a comparative analysis of sociological research in the 1990s and current conditions. The article extensively reviews the related literature and outlines the Equal Employment Opportunity Directives.
The results of this study offer an overview of the dynamics of the problematic employment of African American men and women in managerial positions in the 1990s. The prejudices of the persons responsible for the designation to the position prevent the representatives of this ethnic group from obtaining managerial positions. In chances where they succeed, the process requires more effort than in the case of White Americans. I can use this information in my final research project to highlight issues of racial inequality in employment and identify critical areas for inclusion in the future.
