The amygdala is a brain structure that plays a vital role in processing emotions. Even though many people associate fear and anxiety specifically with the work of this structure, in fact, such a statement is erroneous. The amygdala performs a much more comprehensive range of functions, mainly recognizing social and emotional triggers and initiating appropriate responses. Fear, as an emotion, is not solely determined by the amygdala; various factors also influence it.
At the same time, the brain’s task is to assess the situation and its potential danger to the individual’s life and safety. From a biological perspective, the amygdala triggers the release of adrenaline, which in turn triggers physiological reactions such as increased heart rate. However, its activity is inextricably linked with the cognitive aspect and the work of other brain structures.
A risk assessment occurs subconsciously when a person finds himself in a potentially dangerous situation. Typically, this process occurs independently, with the brain recognizing and analyzing potential triggers, and the individual may not even notice the approach of such a situation. After evaluation, the message is transmitted between brain structures, including the amygdala, which causes a relevant response in the individual. This process takes no more than a second and occurs regularly in the brain. Since the amygdala is responsible for hormone production, it is often associated with fear. However, this approach to explaining emotions oversimplifies the complex processes in the human mind and excludes other aspects, such as cognitive and social processes.
At the same time, fear is a multifaceted phenomenon influenced by various factors. These include personal experience, cultural differences, and assessment of circumstances. This reaction is preceded by complex brain activity that cannot be reduced solely to amygdala function. In addition, it does not have a significant effect on what may trigger feelings of fear or anxiety. This structure is responsible for emotional reflexes formed from previously experienced events or known information. This implies that the amygdala’s functioning is influenced by other factors, which is why it cannot be equated with fear.
