Reflecting on my thoughts after reading the book, it is worth noting that I was left with an impression that is difficult to call unequivocally positive or negative. The author’s confirmation about the overload of dopamine in modern society became enlightening for me and prompted me to a thought-provoking analysis. Moreover, the idea that every pleasure has a price, and its price is pain, deeply resonated with me (Bullen, 2021, 00:05:10-00:05:15). Although at first, I did not understand how these two concepts are related, after reading the book, I agree that in our brain, pleasure and pain are in the same place.
Furthermore, the author also offers strategies for achieving a balance between pleasure and self-control, one of which is the mindfulness approach. On the one hand, this technique aims to help individuals find peace and allow their minds to wander freely without judgment (Alvear et al., 2022). However, on the other hand, mindfulness also needs to be learned, and not everyone can achieve it, especially considering the stress factors and the fast pace of life. In my opinion, offering this practice as an aid to those who are not in a position to master it would pose a double challenge. Nevertheless, mindfulness can and should be applied in a clinical environment under the guidance and supervision of a professional as required by a specific situation.
Application
Despite my subjective reflections on the book, the ideas presented in it can have significant practical applications, particularly in a family environment. Self-binding is a concept often used in everyday life. For example, my parents often set a limit for watching cartoons, especially at night before bed, and said that I would become too emotional if I watched too much. Although I did not understand the connection at the time, I am now aware of the concepts that guided them. Excessive time spent in front of the screen can lead to the development of unhealthy behavioral habits (Pearson et al., 2020). Although in this example, the practice is not applied by a person independently but by parents to a child, this correlates with the idea of the book about the effectiveness of restrictions.
