Background
The artwork I chose for the analysis is a reproduction of Kazimir Malevich’s painting Woman Worker. It was exhibited alongside another reproduction and several original works by a street artist on February 2 to showcase his skill. The author used oil on canvas to depict a realistic portrait of a woman that immediately draws the viewer in and urges them to examine it closely.
Description
The painting depicts a woman with her hands bent against a dark background, on a canvas measuring approximately 40 x 50 cm. The author used mostly straight, vertical lines of varying lengths to depict the character. Some brush strokes are more vivid to add contrast, while others are subtle to convey the smooth transition between the colors and hues. The painting is two-dimensional, with the positive space prevailing over the negative. The woman’s figure has soft edges, and the texture varies from soft in her clothes to harsh in her hands. The image is overall dark, with high-intensity, high-value black, red, blue, and yellow.
Analysis
The composition of the given painting comprises several elements that work together to convey its meaning. In general, the work is symmetrically balanced, and its scale corresponds to what it represents. Yet the main emphasis is placed on the woman’s strong hands, depicted as larger and stronger than is usually expected. Moreover, they are bent in a way typical of holding something, but they are empty. The woman’s empty hands and eyes, together with the dark background, create unity in the image, while the strong hands contrast with the smooth figure, adding variety.
Interpretation
The artwork under consideration could represent a metaphor of irrelevant labor – one that results in a loss or one that brings no gains. From the painting’s title, we learn that the woman is a worker, a point reinforced by her strong, bent hands. In my opinion, the position of the hands is similar to the position of a mother holding her baby. Yet, her hands are empty, and this can symbolize her loss or her hope that did not come true. The dark, empty background and the hollow gaze reinforce this idea of emptiness. Therefore, one can assume that her work is worthless for bringing happiness or even responsible for a tragedy.
Evaluation
The painting left a strong impression on me due to both its imagery and the meaning it conveys. At first glance, the portrait raises a difficult-to-formulate question, yet it encourages further examination. The portrait is powerful because it offers a hint but demands that the viewer reflect and try to guess what lies behind its unique imagery.
I also liked the visual part due to the high mastery of the author, who managed to construct a vivid and disturbing expression of emptiness that evokes a strong emotional response. Moreover, the deliberate use of colors and hues imbues the character with life, which adds to the feeling of sympathy towards her. Therefore, both the form and the content of this artwork are remarkable.
