At normal situations, human beings find themselves in conflict between works and relaxation (Swamson, 2009). For optimal production, people need to have an effective work-life matrix. Darren Rowse developed a work rest matrix where he defined four main quadrants of human needs as desk job, strategy or sports, sleep and exercise.

Literature review

When someone works without rest, he is likely to become exhausted, stressed, and depressed; his or her output does down. Human beings when working have to use their mental or physical power; they are putting these resources into use for the benefit of their works. When one has used the resources, they need to be restored and improved for further exploitation.

In modern management work, scholars are more interested on working smart other than working hard, working smart means planning ones time and resources in such a way that he can find time and resources to work, rest, relax, interact (human beings are social beings), spend with the family and exercise (Smith & Mazin, 2004).

Having an effective work-life balance, then it improves firm’s productivity. When someone has worked for a long period without resting, then he might have the right tools but fails to have the right temperament, attitude, and perception to effectively produce high results.

To have the right temperament, attitude and perception, someone must be in peace with his mind; one way of being at peace with one’s mind is through relaxation, exercises, and having a positive social life.

For example when someone has no time and to address some domestic issues facing him, then his concentration at the work place will be low; with low concentration, then there will be a reduced decisions leading to reduced output (WorkLifeBalance, 2003)..

When someone is stress for working for long periods, there are some health implications that one is endangering himself. Human memory level is maintained higher when a person has minimal stress in life, when someone has working without relaxing, then the memory rate decreased.

Memory is crucial in day-to-day operation of human being. What happens when one’s mind is not at peace, then someone starts to forget the things that he thinks that he should be remembering; this leads to depression. The result will be low productivity both at social life and in working environment.

As life changes there are new things that we have to learn to be in line with the changing life, this may be at working places or in social dynamics. With stress then absorption level of new things reduces and cannot learn new techniques of doing things (WorkLifeBalance, 2003).

Depression is the main disturbance that can make someone’s life complete mess, according to Hellhammer and Juliane states that, “Several disturbances are considered to be psychosomatic since their onset and reoccurrence seems to be influenced by psychological, social or behavioral event” (Hellhammer & Juliane 2009). When someone is depressed, then social life and working life is affected negatively.

On the other hand when someone takes the option of relaxing most of his time, then he is likely to suffer personally and lead to suffering of the society and the world in general.

It is through working that someone resources can be exploited and put into effective use; when methods of exploiting available resources effectively, then the world is able to fulfill its population needs.

It is also worth noting than even if someone has inherited or accumulated billions of wealth the resources need to be managed failure to which they can easily deplete and the person involved with suffer (Maya-Clinic, 2010).

There are high chances that behavior of resting can lead to health complications; for example if someone decided the best he can do is to relax watching television and other medias, then a person is more likely to suffer from nutrition diseases like obesity and being overweight.

These are life-threatening diseases; they also lead to other related diseases like cancer. Other than getting money and other resources when working; there is the social benefit that a person get when working, they include social skills development, innovation skills and inventive skills; when someone is not working, he will suffer the social benefits (Uscher, 2000).

For a healthy life, people need to balance work and life; they should ensure that they allocate adequate resources to either of them since they are closely interrelated.

When one is allocated more attention than the other is, after sometime, it will lead to negative effect on one health, social, and economic situation. The results are deteriorated lifestyle and low production (Renckly & Renckly, 2003).
