Being a successful server requires the right kind of personality and skills. First, a waiter must know the rules of etiquette. Servers are expected to be well-mannered, courteous, and respectful; not following these rules will be perceived as impolite and disgraceful. A polite demeanor and smiling make the customer more likely to feel sympathy and tip. Moreover, a waiter must have the ability to communicate with people wherein the speech should be rich and expressive. Communication skills are very important for a person whose tips depend on others. A study in Taiwan reports that a server’s action directly impacts the likelihood of customers tipping (Hsiao and others, 2022). To equate tipping to success as a restaurant worker means servers must be able to understand customers. Most importantly, the waiter must be flexible when communicating with a dissatisfied customer. Hypothetically, talking could reduce the harm from a server accidentally bringing the wrong dish or making mistakes. Possessing the discussed qualities of a waiter, the waiter can succeed in his work.
