Introduction
This paper is aimed to make a review of two articles which are devoted to the topical issue of bioenergy. It is going to dwell upon their hypotheses and consider arguments to prove them or reject them. Finally, it will present the author’s viewpoint on the matter.
Review of Articles
The articles which have been chosen to be discussed in this paper are as follows: 1) “Global Bioenergy Potential through 2050” by Fischer and Schattenholzer and 2) “Exploration of the Ranges of the Global Potential of Biomass for Energy” by Hoogwijk et al. It is necessary to point out that the first article was written in 2000, whereas the other dates to 2002. Therefore, it is likely to consider almost the same level of scientific development in the sphere. The first article asserts that the planet has enough raw materials to provide the globe with bioenergy up to 2050. The second article reflects on the same question but without any relation to the year 2050. Besides, it speculates on the range of the materials which can be used to produce bioenergy. Both of the articles give an insight into the possible development and improvement in terms of bioenergetic applications. Thus, they arrive at the conclusion that there exists the possibility of shifting to the complete use of bioenergy. Hence, they provide a positive perspective on the issue and support the possibility of having an environmentally friendlier life on the planet.
The articles have the following ideas in common. Bioenergy is acknowledged to stand for the production of energy from biofuel of different types. Thus, bioenergy is stated to be produced of energy from firm types of biofuel, such as wood chips, pellets of wood, peelings, and biomass briquettes, as well as from biogas and liquid biofuel of various origins. The notion of bioenergy is used both in the power and heat industries. Besides, it is known to be applied in combined-heat-and-power engineering and production. Globally, the term “bioenergy” in the energetic meaning of the word started being used with the appearance of first biofuel enterprises. The biofuel is used to get heat and electricity at heat-and-power enterprises. Apart from that, there exist some projects which are aimed at producing heat and electricity for biofuel. However, the energy powers of such devices were not high in the early 2000s and, thus, could not be compared to the power of the atom industry. Furthermore, since the beginning of the 2000s, several industrial areas have tended to increase the volume of biofuel production and be willing to make a complete shift from common fuel to biofuel. They have prepared and implemented a number of projects on bioenergy so as to get warmth and electricity.
At present, technologies of recycling of biologic raw materials are broadly used to solve the problem of ecologically secure utilization of organic waste products and reduction in environmental pollution, as well as to obtain the alternative energy. One of the major tendencies of development of agro-industrial regions is to search for the best and most available technologies of recycling of organic waste products with the help of complex technologies of the utilization of biomass due to methane fermentation so as to get biogas (Fischer and Schattenholzer 153-155; Hoogwijk 120-124). Both of the articles have presented the necessary data and conducted tests in order to prove their hypotheses and make predictions that are possible to draw from the hypotheses. They have concluded that the population of the planet will be able to reduce harmful productions and resort to non-dangerous ways of supplying everything that humanity might need.
When it comes to my opinion, I have to admit that it is rather difficult not to agree with the authors due to the following fact. Since the articles were written almost two decades ago, they are likely to be considered out-of-date. Some of their predictions for 2050 have already come true due to the rapid development of technologies and sciences. For instance, biofuel is produced and used worldwide, and there is a tendency for a further increase in its popularity. The topic of environmental friendliness in industries has been urgent for many years and will keep its relevant importance for many years to come. This is due to the fact that the population of the planet has been searching for ways to contribute to the improvement of the environment but not to its deterioration. As a matter of fact, the authors of the articles do not go deep inside the topic of environmental protection. However, in present-day society, it arises easily in case any issues connected with bioenergy are considered.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is necessary to point out that this paper has made a review of two articles which are devoted to the topical issue of bioenergy. It has reflected upon their hypotheses and considered arguments to prove them or reject them. Finally, it has presented the authors’ viewpoint on the matter.
