For many years, scientists have been trying to find out whether it is possible for people to change their personalities. The results of different researches have revealed that personality is changing throughout life in a predictable way. According to the maturity principle, people change with time, and these changes have the same patterns. For example, people tend to become more agreeable and conscientious when they grow up and get older. Extraversion increases until middle age, then becomes stable. Thus, for different traits, there are different patterns. There are some examples from real life that can illustrate it. Many parents try to teach their children to behave well, and it seems that they have always been like that: responsible, conservative, and a little bit boring. But usually, it turns out that they were very adventurous when they were young and did the things that they ask their children not to repeat after them.
Another fact concerning personality is that people often act out of their character, and their behavior largely depends on the situation. People rather have behavioral patterns that can be repeated or not than a stable character. Thus, these patterns can be changed if a person tries to do this. In an attempt to change, it is important to understand that there should be a clear goal that would be possible to achieve. I agree with this assumption, as I once have decided to be less sensitive to people’s words and resentful. In my childhood, it was a problem for me, but when my friend told me about that, I decided to change. I started to watch my emotions and analyze them instead of reacting impulsively. Now I feel that it made my life easier, and I have really changed. Thus, I think that it is possible to change some patterns of character if a person really wants to do this.
