Problem Definition and Introduction

This is my question for the targeted research: How does child neglect affects low income elementary school age children? Child neglect is a topic that continues to attract the attention of many researchers and educationists. Low income families are usually associated with increased cases of child neglect. The affected children encounter numerous obstacles, including homelessness, poverty, and poor health support.

Childhood poverty results in poor health and increased mortality in adulthood (DuPre 24). Affected young individuals lack adequate care and find it hard to pursue their academic goals. Studies have revealed that most of the affected children record below average grades (Blyth 99). Some might develop emotional, psychological, and behavioral disorders. Many neglected children quit school and engage in criminal acts. A proper understanding of the issues many victims of child neglect face can guide policymakers, educationists, and elementary teachers to implement superior strategies to meet their needs.

Literature Review (Annotated Bibliographies)

Allen, Brian, and Mindy Kronenberg, editors. Treating Traumatized Children: A Casebook of Evidence-Based Therapies. The Guilford Press, 2014.

I selected this book for my research paper because it offers evidence-based ideas that leaders can embrace to tackle the challenge many traumatized children face. The editors reveal that child abuse can have negative impacts on many children. Such individuals perform poorly in class. Some also quit school and engage in inappropriate behaviors (Allen and Kronenberg 48). This book presents powerful concepts and findings from an economic perspective. This information will be included in my research paper and guide societies to address this social issue.

Blyth, Maggie. Moving on From Munro: Improving Children’s Services. Policy Press, 2014.

This book by Maggie Blyth offers several arguments and ideas that policymakers can use to improve children’s services. The author presents numerous concepts to support the importance of powerful policies in meeting the needs of the targeted children. The text is appropriate for my answer since it explains why increased cases of abuse make it impossible for many children to concentrate in class (Blyth 108). Abused children record increased levels of depression and suspicion. They also develop negative attitudes towards the people around them and find it hard to achieve their potential.

DuPre, D’Michelle P. Child Abuse Investigation Field Guide. Oxford, 2015.

I selected this book for the research paper because it explains how children with histories of maltreatment experience increased levels of impairments, including academic performance and mental wellbeing. Those who are affected usually require specialized instructions or record poor grades. Some of the common outcomes include anxiety, aggression, poor social skills, and underdeveloped interpersonal relationships (DuPre 26). The authors offer adequate procedures for monitoring the affected children.

Henslin, James M. Essentials of Sociology. 12th ed., Pearson, 2017.

The main reason for selecting this book is that it gives a detailed analysis and discussion of various research methods (Henslin 29). Additionally, the author acknowledges that many parents and policymakers have continued to ignore this issue. This book encourages policymakers to recognize and identify affected individuals in an attempt to provide adequate support. They should also form multidisciplinary teams with educators and teachers to address this predicament. The author indicates that this problem can be analyzed from a sociological perspective to ensure that more victims of abuse record positive educational outcomes.

Righthand, Sue. Child Maltreatment Risk Assessments: An Evaluation Guide. Taylor and Francis, 2013.

I decided to select this book for my research because it presents appropriate insights that can guide parents and community members to meet children’s educational needs. The author acknowledges that child maltreatment is something that makes it impossible for many children to develop appropriate cognitive, emotional, and resilience skills. Such children also perform poorly in their respective learning institutions and eventually become troubled adults (Righthand 74). This information can empower many people to implement superior laws to empower all abused children.

Hypothesis

Neglected children from low income families and neighborhoods record poor academic outcomes in comparison with those who receive adequate care, support, and empowerment.

Choosing a Research Method

I believe that the scientific research method can be appropriate for this research. The first step will be to make adequate observations. The second one is to consider several questions to guide the study (Henslin 25). The independent variables for will be poverty and child neglect and the dependent ones will be economic development and academic performance. Thirdly, a hypothesis will be formulated to guide the research study. Fourthly, I will use the information collected from the selected secondary articles, publications, and case studies to get the intended findings. Finally, I will compose the final paper and draw appropriate conclusions.

Personal Response

The completed exercise has equipped me with adequate ideas and insights about the issue of child neglect. I have managed to find the best answer to my question. I have realized that this is a topic that many scholars, parents, social workers, and governments have ignored over the years (Henslin 73). All the selected books offer quality information, including the challenge of poverty, child neglect, academic performance, and economic empowerment (Righthand 102).

The most important thing learned from this study is that the number of children in need of adequate care and support is on the rise (Blyth 92). The main challenge encountered throughout the research period was the lack of adequate time. My first reaction is that there is a need for appropriate systems and programs to empower the affected individuals (Allen and Kronenberg 49). Secondly, societies that empower their children will address challenges such as poor academic performance, juvenile delinquency, and insecurity.
