The current crisis in America with regards to education can be described as acquiring more and more complications nowadays. Varied educational establishments have showed lower results compared to the abundance of the other countries in the world. In addition, college students in general demonstrate their disregard to academic values. It seems that many students consider their college time as an opportunity to associate with their peers and spend their time in a pleasant way in constant partying and the other recreational events.
Taking an honest look at today college students, it is necessary to admit that students in general do not seem to have a serious attitude to their college studies. More than this, students simply do not attend the classes. One of the latest researches suggests that 36 percent of students in American colleges do not improve their knowledge during all the years spent for studies (Jaschik par.7). People believe that students should expand their knowledge while in college; however, the results of current researches prove that such assumption is “”invalid” (Grassgreen par.6). It is hardly that such results may be caused by their intellectual incapacities; they are probably conditioned by students’ attitude. This is connected to the culture behind these students: numerous specialists around the world admit the ever growing tendency among young people to relax and enjoy themselves. Students believe that the best thing for them is to have fun and spend their college years in a way that guarantees “the best” memories.
Exploring the overall attitude of today’s college students, it is evident that they are less responsible than students in the past. The bribing practice comes to academic life more and more steadily (Jaschik par.18). Students do not strive as hard as in the past because they know they may buy anything. Students practice such strategies not only on the reason of their desire to have a lot of fun while their studies, but also as more and more of them have to pay for their education by themselves. This means that they are to work for long hours to support themselves, and thus, there is no time left for studies. Pressures are hard for many students, and this becomes the reason why more students have a tendency to live their studies before graduation. Those students who do graduate show worse academic results during their graduation exams (Grassgreen par.11).
Another serious problem which is getting more and more complicated is the use of drugs and alcohol among the college students. This is, in turn, connected to more issues such as violence and crimes. Students in the condition of intoxication are more aggressive, they also need money to pay for their life style. Violence and crimes among the college student are also caused by many more reasons including racial prejudice, spirit of aggressiveness actively promoted through media and many more.
In conclusion, college students in the United States seem to demonstrate their disrespect to academic values. The percentage of students who consider their college time as an opportunity to have fun and spend their time in a pleasant way in constant parties is growing ever more. In addition, the students face more economical problems. The world economy is getting worse, thus, more and more students cannot rely on their parents, they have to work long hours to support themselves. This, in turn, destructs them from studies.
