The 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28) will take place at the end of 2023 in the United Arab Emirates and is a significant attempt by this country to influence the global political narrative and, first of all, its place in it. The conference will be devoted to the global cooling of the planet in order to avoid environmental disasters. More than one hundred world leaders are involved in this meeting, and the good intentions of the hosts of this conference are clearly emphasized.
It is necessary to look at the current situation between the lines, comparing sources of information that are clearly contradictory. The social norms of this country restrict citizens in many basic rights, up to changing jobs. In this context, the conference is perceived as the creation of a strategic narrative. In this cognitive domain, UAE leaders express not only concern about the fate of the world but also a willingness to do as much as possible to change the common future for the better. The media space around this conference is undergoing environmental cleansing, presenting an organic form sterilized from public opinion.
To conclude, the country seeks to position itself as an engine of positive change in the informational and cognitive domains, while the aspirations of the democratic freedoms of the regular person are critically suppressed. The concept of media ecology introduced in “Forging the World” has a chilling dimension in the context of the upcoming COP28. This is because positive changes in the world are taking place in parallel with the physical totalitarianization of everyday life, the narrative of which is extremely limited.
