Summary
Written by Silverleib and Cohen, the article ‘Democrats, Republicans agree on a budget deal’ tables the decisions lastly reached by both the republicans and the democrats concerning the extension of funding meant to bring in order, smooth functioning of the government for a short time. This decision reached implied a $2 billion reduction of the spending trend of the people (Silverleib and Cohen Para.2). This decision happened after some hustles between the two aforementioned parties with each side showing its supremacy, depicted by a number of meetings and consultations. Finally, the deal sealed aimed at ensuring the survival and sustainability of the government.
These closed-door negotiations and consultations finally bore to the public outcries. However, a framework that targeted at cutting the spending approximated as $38.5 billion came into existence purposely to cover that fiscal year up to the end of September (Silverleib and Cohen Para.5). Even with the employment of political schemes in the issue, their wish to cut as far as $61dollars did not seem successful because of the fact that Republicans had attained a majority in the house of a republic in their midterm elections.
This, therefore, illustrates how politics come into play in the key decisions of the governments. Therefore, despite the difference in opinions and views, they reached a common figure of $38.5 billion, which they passed and approved. The decision according to the US president Barrack Obama was worth approbation as it provided relief and hope to the economy of its people and the US. The move according to him helped the government in avoiding shutting up as people.
Otherwise, small business people would secure loans, get the mortgages they have applied for and many of the citizens will report on their work and at least have something to sustain their day-to-day living. Therefore, the decision was qualified as one of its own kind as it provided hope for the country: hope that was fading away among the citizens of the US. By reaching this agreement, America had succumbed to collapse.
Opinion
In my own opinion, this article raises many queries as to whether political decisions made by our political leaders are well thought out and if actually they are reached after a careful contemplation considering the plight of the citizens who elected them. Political leaders on most occasions make decisions just for the sake simply to prove that they have the power and authority to overrule certain decisions. Further, they do so to hurt their opponents and ‘enemies’ in politics.
For instance, the tussle and hassle between the republican and the democrats in the proposed health plan by the president clearly show how the fight for control and power seems rife in our political structures. This, therefore, raises many questions as to why these leaders engage in the debates unconsciously as well as why they allow the electorates who elect them in the houses of representatives to serve for their own interests.
It seems therefore apparent that, as long as the decision reached for cutting spending by $2 billion was of great importance in salvaging the economy of American, it was reached after a great fight and debate between the two parties which demonstrate the greediness of our leaders. Leaders should not allow their selfish interest to lead them. Instead, they need to put the interest of the citizens who appear as the majority as a priority. Therefore, they need to make informed decisions. Therefore, even if they come from different political parties, their conscience should always guide them in making decisions, which concern the general citizens.
I conquer with the president of the US who has the interests of his citizens at stake and therefore agitates for their rights to be upheld even if they might cost high sums of money to the republic. It proves a meaningful investment meant to bring to higher levels the health status of women. Therefore, political decisions need to be independent of where the leaders come, a criterion that will make people attain higher levels of economic growth based on the predicted rise in living standards.
