The protests following the death of George Floyd exposed the problem of economic inequality in the United States. According to economists, the gap between African Americans and white people has remained the same since the middle of the last century (Marino et al. 510). The problem of inequality between black and white people, racism, and the injustice of dividing people into categories has been an important issue of social justice. This pro is discussed very often in books, films, songs, and all other possible forms of art and culture. Directed by Peter Farrelly, the 2018 film Green Book explores the intricacies of this particular topic.
This film received many awards, but the opinions of critics and viewers turned out to be ambiguous. Ohno has received a fair amount of backlash for how the film tackles racism by downplaying the racist meaning of the Green Book. The film has been accused of mitigating the racism that blacks had to face at the hands of whites in the 60s and continues to face even to this day. It is argued that the film is characterized by such a frequent problem of works about racism as a white savior. It is also stated that the film prioritized the emotional journey of the white character and placed more emphasis on his humanity than on issues of racism. However, this work reveals that the intention of the Green Paper is to show the evolution of relations between people of different races and emphasize that not only black people should fight for their rights, but it should be a common struggle. Only joint efforts, understanding, and awareness of the problem can lead to real changes in society and cope with racial inequality as an injustice that limits human opportunities and freedoms.
