Introduction

The worst thing that is happening on the Earth today is global warming. Even worse is the fact that activities of human beings cause this very process. Such activities range from the release of carbon emissions to the use of fertilizers. Most of the scientists that have been dealing with Earth related issues for several years have an opinion that human beings actively participate in the destruction of the planet. Also, they are the ones who can actively participate in its rescue. They can do so either by stopping negative actions or introducing new ones to save the Earth. The author of The Vanishing of Gaia has a very different opinion on this issue.

Humans’ Destruction of the Earth

Lovelock only agrees with the others to a small degree: the humans have destroyed the Earth. He, however, does not support the fact that the planet has no processes of its own. He does not believe that human beings can entirely manipulate the Earth to either be productive or not. He has a belief that the Earth has its way of operation and when things start to go wrong, the planet itself will find a way to bring back the equilibrium. He says that when this happens, it will not matter who or what is going to get hurt in the process.

Balancing of the Earth’s Equilibrium

The author argues that there is no way that the Earth can return to the way it was before global warming. There are some reasons for that in his opinion. First of all, there are many things that human beings are capable of doing now that they could not do in the past. There are a lot of industrial processes without which human beings would not be able to survive today. He, therefore, says that all those green initiatives that people have been trying to implement to save the planet are, for lack of a better word, useless.

Scientific Methods for Prevention of Global Warming

There is no way that humans can dismiss all the science that exists. Instead, it is the same science that can help in the reduction of environmental pollution that is causing global warming. This can be done through geo-engineering processes, which means that the atmosphere gets exposed to aerosol acid droplets to help reduce the effects of global warming. Scientists, however, warn that this process may have side effects, most of which we are not even aware of yet.

Human Overpopulation

Human overpopulation is another issue raised by the author. He says that there is not enough food in the ecosystem that can serve both the animal kingdom and the humans. It is the scramble for the limited resources that has resulted in the scarcity of food, thus leading to disasters such as drought and famine.

Conclusion

Therefore, even when the processes the author proposed are put into action, people should consider ways to reduce increasing rate of human population. For a long time it has been a very sensitive topic and thus it has not fully remained developed. He warns that humans may not want to face this reality since they would have to deal with population reduction. He warns every human to remember that while the Earth is trying to return to equilibrium, it will not pay attention to any disturbances, even human beings.
