Introduction
There are many ways to check the progress of students and their achievements in the educational process. New York State conducts an ELA test that displays student scores by gender, ethnicity, and other characteristics, including students with financial and physical disabilities. The data given for 2013-2014 and 2018-2019 show changes and relationships of some groups with their results. Thus, it is possible to trace some trends and links based on the available statistics for the indicated years.
Discussion
Based on the information, the following unbiased observations can be put forward. If one considers all students, then in 2013-2014 a little more than four hundred thousand are tested, of which 26% and 28%, respectively, reach the third and fourth levels (NYC public schools 2013-2014, n.d.). In 2018-2019, a trend towards improvement is visible, although in these years there were somewhat fewer participants and the figure dropped to 396 and 392 thousand, with students who crossed the threshold of the third level of 47% in both years (NYC public schools 2018-2019, n.d.). Thus, there is clear progress in the academic performance of children in the region is improving.
Moreover, the data is distributed more accurately by gender and ethnicity. In all years, men participate more than women, on average by ten to fifteen thousand people. However, they show more people passed the threshold of the third and fourth levels (Districts, n.d.). This may indicate a relationship with regard to how teenage girls can be more diligent in their studies than boys. In addition, there are more men who were at the first level according to the results of the test in all years than women. In terms of race, whites show the most impressive results in all years. The number of proficient in 2013-2014 and in 2018-2019 exceeds 60% years (NYC public schools 2018-2019, n.d.). While the African American population shows evidence that for the most part academic performance remains at the first level. This may be due to the economic and social context of the students. Currently, more African Americans than whites in the US are experiencing financial hardship. Thus, it can be concluded that their performance is related to social stratification rather than ethical background.
Additionally, performance data speaks volumes within the education system. In 2013 and 2014, the number of people in the first level is 36% and 35%, respectively years (NYC public schools 2013-2014, n.d.). In 2018 and 2019, this figure changes slightly and the figure drops to 24% and 25% years (NYC public schools 2018-2019, n.d.). The meaning of this may lie in the fact that there have been improvements in the educational process and students were able to receive more knowledge and apply it in practice.
As a result, it can be said about the strengths of the data obtained. First of all, in five years you can see a decrease in the number of students at the first level and an increase in the third and fourth levels. At this stage, students demonstrate that their academic performance meets state standards. However, there is room for improvement, which affects the overall policy of the state. Since it is noted that among the African American population a smaller percentage of people show high results, attention should be paid to the ethnic problem in education.
Conclusion
The improvement plan should include assistance to lagging students in the form of extra classes and colloquia. Such lessons should be held 2-3 times a week after the main school day of students. Children are divided into groups according to problematic topics, and they are engaged in them more intensively in order to go in accordance with the program. Moreover, an important point is to conduct a professional evaluation of teachers in schools with the lowest results, after which a decision is made on their suitability. In the event of layoffs, the recruitment program should address the shortage of staff and provide schools with new employees.
