Prevention is always better than cure. It is the role of every government to ensure that its citizens are healthy. Achieving this requires all concerned institutions to corporate. Nursing is a profession that deals with in-patients and outpatients. Understanding the factors that can affect patients is very important so as to trace the origin of their problems (Diana and Judith, 1998). To attain this, a visit to the city council of Norfolk was necessary.
The exploration would present an insight of how government state entities are committed towards empowering their citizens so as to realize good health. These state agencies are important in enacting regulations regarding housing. In addition, it ensures that delivery of safe water to the people is done. As well, the agency ensures that the environment within its areas of jurisdictions are clean. The other responsibility is to ensure that health centers are adequate with respect to the population and that there are enough learning institutions where health experts can train. The leadership structure of the council has a mayor as the chairperson. Other dockets of the council include city administrator, finance officer, systems manager in charge of information and a superintended in charge of waste water. The directors of water and sewer and the chief fire officer also work with other arms of the council such as the director in charge of economic development to ensure harmony. The major objectives were to find out the contributing factors to major diseases and ailments in the city and to explore the measures/regulations the city council were putting in place to arrest and reverse the health problems (Diana and Judith, 1998). These objectives would give an insight on the common problems being experienced within the city council and how the authorities are dealing with them. Besides, it would bring to light any legislation any legislation besides pointing out any lapses that should be addressed so as to improve health service delivery by the city council.
From the interaction with the city council of Norfolk, special presentations were observed. This included a roadmap for economic development emphasizing on enlarging the business empire, training the work force and good housing. The water management, safety and proper drainage patterns were also well thought out. The rules regarding water quality and standards were revised so as to meet the federal government threshold that had been in use for a long time. The aspects that were considered in the revision were both short and long term. The short term goals lay great emphasis on how construction and disturbances to soil could contaminate water. The long term perspectives were redevelopment of water delivery within the council. Further, every authority was compelled to comply with the rules and any failure would lead to penalty. This would help in reducing water borne diseases. Finally, water from storms was to be managed as well (Diana and Judith, 1998).
In summary, various branches of governments have a role in enhancing good health among the people. This helps in promoting good health as the causes of ill health are diverse and therefore need multi-disciplinary approaches to be addressed.
