The History and Founder of Linux
Linus Torvalds created Linux in 1991, one of the most popular operating systems for servers and desktop PCs. Linux uses concepts of Unix projects of the open-source software it still implements (Fox, 2021). To get support from Linux, a company can visit Linux’s official website and leave a message there or address any questions in Linux-based forums. In addition, there are various Linux guides and books to address any concerns and issues.
Linux is a diverse tool that can be implemented in different systems, such as industrial and home platforms, including personal computers, servers, smartphones, flash memory devices, and other devices. Camisso (2020) explains the important role of Linux in being irreplaceable for system administrators. In addition, different software can be used on Linux, free or paid. This essay will review it from the perspective of three software programs: Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and Notepad.
Linux-Based Systems and Software
The first software – Microsoft Office- is not available on Linux but can be easily replaced by alternatives such as LibreOffice, which is cheaper and can support more file extensions. Adobe Photoshop is adapted to Linux and is called Adobe Photoshop Express. Its main advantage is that it is available, but it does not allow using all the functions available in the original Adobe Photoshop. Lastly, Notepad has a Notepad++ application for Linux. There are more advanced features like syntax highlighting and plugin support. In addition, it is free of charge for Linux users.
Cost Savings and Learning Curve for Employees
Linux is more cost-saving for employees since it has more free or low-cost applications for company use. Licensing Linus for 100 employees will save money compared with implementing high-cost Microsoft Windows. In addition, the company will save on applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. However, it will also require some training for employees, so the learning curve will largely depend on the efficiency of education. The expected time and costs can vary within each company depending on the applications it requires to use and the basic computer knowledge that its employees possess.
