Introduction

The ability of the society to thrive and develop depends mainly on the diversity of its members, their collective unity as well as members’ interaction in terms of, thoughts, education, livelihood, and pleasant operation.

In this essay we will focus on the core value of respect in Saint Leo University which, with a focus on doing the will of Jesus Christ, every person is considered valuable. This also applies to their talents, dignity and commitment for excellence at work and at all times.

Tourism

Tourism is a rapid increasing business and a precious division that contribute considerably to the nation’s wealth. Tourism directly affects financial system and this is reflected to the life standards of people among other development parameters that depend on funding to implement.

There is however some negative impacts associated with too much undertaking in tourism just like in any other departments. Tourism in the recent past has been noted to have various impacts some of which are classified into either positive impact or negative impact.

These must however be compared with the positive impacts that tourism brings in the society. Negative impacts come along when tourism alters important systems or behavior which could lead to intimidating the original identity of the society.

These alterations regularly take place in society arrangement, family relationship, communal customary life styles, rituals and integrity.

Tourism has also been noted to produce constructive impacts as it provide a helpful strength for stillness, promote pride in civilizing society members and keeping them away from city rearrangement by creating local jobs. However these social jobs are sometimes considered vague because the jobs do not benefit all people but some (Cook, Yale & Marqua, 2010).

The socio-cultural impact of tourism

The social-cultural impacts of tourism are grouped into two: the negative and positive impacts. The negative effects of tourism include changes and eventual loss of identity and ideals by co-modification which involves tourism changing local cultures.

These factors result to changes in different aspects of the society such as religion, cultural practices and other influential factors like where the society emulate the aspects of the tourists. Tourists are in this respect expected to respect the local culture in relation to religion.

The other effect can occur in form of standardization since tourists mainly seek for popular features including restaurants and hotel chains. In addition, there is a loss of faithfulness which involves becoming accustomed to cultural terminology that fits tourists. The local community should uphold their culture in order to foster respect of the local culture (Sharpley, 2008).

The last concept is adaptation to tourists’ demands where there are wants for the arts, crafts and cultural manifestations causing the craftsmen to respond to the increasing demand for their products. This makes them to improve on the quality, diversity and the designs used so as to meet the needs of their target customers.

This in return leads to erosion of the culture since there are major changes in the cultural commodity and for this regard craft men are expected to preserve their cultural manifestations (Sharpley, 2008).

On the other side, there is culture clashes due to cultural differences and the fact that those differences may raise a lot of issues between the society and the tourists whom they interact with. Tourists and the locals should respect one another and appreciate the fact that different cultures should co-exist in the world.

The other socio cultural impact of tourism is the job level conflict where the local people tend to perform the least paying jobs while the tourists take up well-paying, prestigious managerial jobs.

Since there is deficiency of professional education and a rising demand in hotel chains in the society, those who have required skills and knowledge are employed from other nations.

This may in turn lead to rising differences and misunderstandings hence increasing the difference between cultures. There should be respect among the people working in various categories which would lead to a harmonious working environment.

The other level of socio-cultural impact is the ethical issues associated with tourism. One of the ethical issues is offense generation. Offense rates, characteristically, rise due to enlargement and urbanization of a region and the increased tourism activities that are frequently associated with amplified crime.

Another ethical issues associated with tourism is child labor. Most occupations in the tourism sector have operational as well as employment circumstances which have positive effects in the society. In most of such occupations, children are employed since they are despicable and bendable employees.

This is in most cases against the child rights laws where we are expected to respect the rights of children and child labor should not be allowed (Cook, Yale & Marqua, 2010). The positive impacts of tourism include the strengthening of communities since tourism in some way add vitality of the communities (Sharpley, 2008).

Conclusion

The affirmative penalty of tourism increases due to establishment of development of sustainability in tourism, a factor that is more elaborate with the direct involvement of the society.

Moreover, the society is concerned with preparation as well as accomplishment of tourism and hence undertakes an optimistic approach to realize income from tourism. Hence, with proper management and operation of tourist activities in the society, a society may be able to realize positive benefits instead of experiencing negative effects from tourism.
