In many communities, human sexuality is regarded as a mysterious reality; many communities avoid talking about sex and sexuality. As a result, young people do not receive sex education. My motherland China is a classic example of a community that for many years has invested in sex education. The young Chinese are not taught reproductive rights and responsibilities, sexual abstinence, and birth control.
In society, parents, formal school programs, and public health campaigns are tasked with educating the youth on responsible health. However, the failure to teach sex education places a burden on young people to discover other channels for getting sex education. It also implies that in adulthood, many people are not aware of their reproductive health rights and emotions. In addition, the lack of sex education has led to an unfriendly environment for some people in China. For example, there is an intolerant environment for homosexuals in China. Furthermore, there is a perspective that every family should be raising or making the next generation for their family. This is due to the deep-rooted belief that sex is purely for procreation. To change irresponsible sexual behaviors and negative perceptions towards various social orientations, there is a need for sex education studies in China.
The knowledge I have gained in the sex education classes has enlightened me on many issues that relate to reproduction and reproductive health. Throughout the semester, the classes have provided me with critical knowledge on matters about human sexuality. To replicate the benefits, the learning institutions in China should start programs aimed at fostering responsible behavior and positive attitudes that promote sexual responsibility for the young generations.
