The Shahnameh is an essential work of world literature that traces the lineage of Persian kings and tells the stories of notable figures from different periods. One of the most popular characters is Rustem, whose battle skills and personality features make him the central hero of the book (Ferdowsi, 2020). He is introduced as a servant of kings who obeys their orders and helps them control the realms.
However, Rustem’s character gradually evolves when he faces the difficult decisions between choosing good and remaining loyal to the Shah. In a situation like this, he claims, “my sword is my seal, and my helmet my crown” (Ferdowsi, 2020, p. 39). This quote is essential to understanding the character and Persian culture as a whole. It signifies his will to follow his moral compass and avoid unthinkingly doing what the people in power dictate. Therefore, he is portrayed as a hero with a strong personality who makes his own decisions despite the risk of making mistakes.
Rustem’s decision to base his decision-making on his individual moral compass set him apart from divine kings and made him more human. The Shah and other royal family representatives are portrayed as godlike and detached from reality (Ferdowsi, 2020). Conversely, Rustem focuses on individuals and justifies his actions with life experience. As a result, this hero’s conflict conclusion is a metaphor for people’s power and democracy, which prevents kings from becoming dictators.
A more modern example of a similar character is Harry Potter. He overcomes this conflict by opposing the establishment in line with his moral compass and by starting a course on defensive spells despite the forbidding laws (Rowling, 2023). Both Harry and Rustem became popular characters due to their independent outlooks and vulnerability. In conclusion, Shahnameh features an excellent example of individuality as a force that can prevent dictatorships.
