Introduction

There are certain remarkable differences of opinions on the morality of abortion, which is killing the fetus. Though it is legal to differing extents in many countries depending on various factors, morality largely becomes a matter of argument (Why Abortion, 2008; Thripp, 2008). Hence, it is imperative to know the reasons behind such a moral controversy. It is also essential to focus on the categories of people that go with this matter in quite dissimilar mindsets. Apart from these, the controversy on protecting the human rights of a woman over the potential rights of an unborn baby should be considered.

Main body

Coming to the details, it can be seen that there are plenty of supporters as well as opponents for the concept of abortion. Also, these proportions further vary based on the reason behind going for an abortion. In general, many religious persons such as Catholics are strongly against to this practice. They support their argument by showing holy quotes, like the “You shall not murder” of bible (as cited in Is Abortion Wrong, 2008). Their main argument is that a fetus is not simply a mass of cells but a living being who if allowed results in a human being. Hence, killing a fetus is murdering a human, and no one has such right.

Furthermore, the argument by the opponents of abortion is based on certain logical points as follows. When even one cell creatures are alive, one cannot deny the fact that what is growing in a woman’s womb is not alive (Is Abortion Wrong, 2008). The fetus grows by taking characters inherited through the respective human DNA, and so it is a human being and killing a human should not be allowed (Is Abortion Wrong, 2008).

They further argue that though unwanted pregnancies due to some unfortunate acts such as rape should not disrupt the well being and rights of a woman, the growing unborn child should not pay for someone else’s sin (Is Abortion Wrong, 2008). Even when a teenager gets pregnancy at a very young age, she should not be allowed to go for abortion. Instead, teenagers should receive proper sex education from both the parents and teachers, and be prepared for the risk of having to deal with pregnancy when they go for sex without precautions (Thripp, 2008). Furthermore, these opponents feel that opting for abortion owing to reasons like better career and financial problems is not correct, as the child will not even get a chance to see the world if he is killed before birth (Thripp, 2008). Moreover, they even support the birth of children with physical/mental disabilities, as killing them is simply denying them the chance to prove how they will shine in life even with a disability (Thripp, 2008). Above all, they feel that a woman should not be allowed to execute her human rights at the cost of an unborn baby’s potential rights (Is Abortion Wrong, 2008).

However, many countries such as the United States and Canada have legalized abortions to varying extents because of some valuable reasons (Lafrance, 1995). The supporters of abortion feel that a woman should be given the chance to decide on abortion as being pregnant and having a baby involves dealing with many consequences (Pro-abortion, 2008). The growing unborn baby is the part of respective woman’s body, and so she holds the right to choose abortion (Pro-abortion, 2008). They even say that a victim should not be punished with the consequences when a crime such as a rape occurs (Pro-abortion, 2008). Apart from these, many governments, medical professionals and educated persons strongly feel that abortion should be done to save a mother’s life when no alternative exists (Pro-abortion, 2008; Lafrance, 1995).

Conclusion

All in all, different opinions exist related to the morality of abortion. Hence, choosing abortion should be based on the reason behind such situation, and should be carried out when the woman’s life is in jeopardy for whatever reason and without any apparent mistake from her.
