My research subject is “Impact of implementation of quality management systems on innovations initiatives at Dubai Customs”. Looking for TED talk videos related to this subject I typed in “quality management impact innovations”. After a thorough search, I have located one video that discusses how the improvement of quality stimulates innovative approach.

The video covers the need for quality improvement at Aravind Eye Hospital. The speaker, doctor Venkataswamy, explains how he and his personnel addressed the problem of the low quality of eye services in the community. As a leader, Venkataswamy promotes a patient-centred approach. Working on the quality improvement of their services, the hospital managers focused primarily on the identification of the needs of their patients; the needs that had to be addressed included the lack of access to the services and needless blindness that occurred due to that.

Venkataswamy’s innovative approach was inspired by the service delivery technique employed by McDonalds where many people are involved in the process at the same time, and this work orgaisation allows them to handle a large number of clients within a short period of time (AllAboutQualityUK, 2011). The staff also re-formed their operations and reached out to the community arranging a meeting with everyone in need of help so that the underserved population could receive medical care.

This video is related to my research subject as it is a demonstration of how the need for quality improvement in an organisation has resulted in innovation in the sphere of work organisation and operations management. Besides, the interactive technology with the organisation’s reach-out program helped the hospital to address multiple problems at the same time – provide care to the underserved communities, reduce the chances of needless blindness, educate the population about their health, attract new patients, improve the image of the organisation, and ensure trust between the hospital and the community.

The video shows that a simple reorganisation of operations and service delivery based on the innovative approach is able to increase the efficiency of an organization significantly.

Besides, during my search, I have located one more video related to my research project topic on YouTube and several articles about the quality management impact on innovation. Two of these articles focus on the dimensions of the quality management and how it affects the quality of the process as well as the quality of products (Kim, Kumar, & Kumar, 2012; Kafetzopoulos, Gotzamani, & Gkana, 2015). The third article is a literature review that investigates the relationship between the total quality management and the innovation initiatives in the service delivering organisations (Bon, & Mustafa, 2013).

The last source is very informative as it presents a selection of various findings of multiple studies that facilitate a deeper understanding of theoretical part on my research project supported by the practice and evidence revealed by the scholars. Finally, the additional TED talk video presents a monologue of Simon Sinek, who explains how an excellent organisation leader operated and thinks to inspire the action and innovation among the employees (TED, 2010). I believe that this video offers new insight into how innovation initiative could be stimulated in a company.

To sum up, there is a lot of diverse information concerning the theoretical side of my research project topic. I was able to locate 5 different sources very easily, just using Google Search and YouTube. It is helpful that most of the sources rely on evidence-based research and actual practices to demonstrate the relationship between quality management and innovation initiative. The examples of the other organisations are useful for my better understanding of the processes relevant to Dubai Customs.
