Executive Summary
The present project introduces a new product to the market and details the marketing strategies, situational analysis, and performance projections for the proposed item. While there are particular difficulties associated with creating, testing, and successfully launching a new product, a carefully crafted marketing plan helps avoid most pitfalls. In this endeavor, the product is iFeed: an innovative feeding bottle created by Apple, the tech giant known for products that provide a pleasant experience, comfort, and efficiency.
iFeed is a prestige product and is expected not to conform to the conventional demand curve. However, Apple’s built-in features and overall customer loyalty are expected to enable it to firmly position itself in the US baby bottle market in the first year and continue growing in importance over the following years. The SWOT analysis helps identify threats and weaknesses that the company should mitigate to achieve the new product’s success. Overall, iFeed is a promising offering that aligns with Apple’s mission and goals, positioning it to win customer loyalty and generate revenue in the market.
Overview of Organization
Apple is a formidable corporation acting in the technology industry that has provided its customers with exemplary products boasting unique design and innovation for nearly five decades. The company’s mission is to offer the best user experience through original services, as well as hardware and software (Pereira, 2023). Apple’s goals include enhancing the consumer experience, promoting innovation, pursuing sustainable objectives, and ensuring diversity and inclusion across all its processes. The organization’s product mix consists of tangible items and applications aimed at revolutionizing people’s everyday activities, including the iPhone, iPod, iPad, a variety of Mac models, wearables, accessories, and home products.
Apple’s market cap as of the current month and year is $2.839 trillion, with the largest share being generated in the USA, its home market (“Market capitalization of Apple (AAPL),” n.d.). The company’s brand associations focus on emotions, lifestyle, passion, innovation, and liberty, among others. Apple utilizes a vertical marketing system, which presupposes control over the entire production system, resulting in high levels of innovation and competitiveness, along with an unmatched customer experience.
Overview of New Product
The new product is iFeed – a bottle for feeding babies, enhanced with Apple technologies and aligned with the company’s other products. The customer value of the offered innovation is relatively high, as people are constantly having babies, and the need to feed them never ceases. The core value of the new product for potential customers is the ability to provide the best care for their newborn and to achieve high levels of satisfaction and quality for themselves. A traditional bottle for feeding includes volume indicators and a silicone nipple for the baby to suck from. Some bottles are also supplied with handles that can be used by babies under toddler age and by toddlers, helping develop the child’s movement coordination.
Unlike traditional products, iFeed will include built-in technology to keep the milk warm and to indicate how much the baby has consumed. It will be impossible to use iFeed in a washing machine. Yet many parents avoid washing traditional bottles in this device, so this should not constitute a problem, as it offers benefits that outweigh this limitation.
iFeed will also include a ‘blocking’ feature that prevents milk from flowing when the bottle is in a horizontal position, so if a child falls asleep while being fed, the milk will not wet the baby or the bed. Finally, the option to sync the bottle with music on a parent’s iPhone or iPod is an excellent idea, especially for new parents who never seem to have enough hands to handle everything at once. With the built-in opportunities offered by iFeed, there will be no need to worry about baby food or soothing music in different places, having everything at hand and under control.
A comparison concept statement test was employed, with participants being asked to use the traditional bottle and the iFeed. Initially, the bottle contained only the built-in technology to keep the milk warm and an indicator of the amount consumed (Appendix A). After the first phase of the test, the music in-sync technology was added (Appendix B). Finally, handles were added after the second test phase at the request of respondents (Appendix C). A summary data table of the strengths and weaknesses is presented in Appendix D.
Situation Analysis
The use of SWOT analysis helps identify the product’s assets and its likelihood of success, as well as single out its limitations and aspects that could hinder its release (Grewal & Levy, 2017). Apple’s strengths in management include strong leadership and strategic decision-making, while the main weakness is succession planning. Strengths related to products are innovation and high quality, whereas overreliance on a few key products poses a weakness. Marketing strengths include branding, minimalism, and an emotional connection with clients, but high prices are a significant weakness compared to competitors.
Personnel strengths include top-talent employees and a focus on innovation and creativity, whereas talent retention is a crucial weakness. Strengths in finance involve high profit margins and considerable cash reserves, but dependence on several key markets is a weakness. Apple’s heavy investment in research and development is a strength, but keeping its projects secret is a weakness, as it can lead to missed opportunities. Finally, the main strength in manufacturing is efficient chain management, while overreliance on outsourcing partners is a weakness.
Opportunities for consumers arise from affordability initiatives and the diversification of the product ecosystem, while technological obsolescence and high prices pose threats. In the immediate environment, strategic partnerships and an improved retail experience are opportunities, while intense competition is a threat. Lastly, the main opportunities in the macroenvironment are technological advancements and global market expansion, while the economic downturn and regulatory challenges pose threats.
iFeed is well-suited to Apple’s marketing environment, as it highlights the company’s strengths across products, marketing, finance, manufacturing, and research and development. The new product is also likely to enhance Apple’s opportunities for consumers and both the immediate and macro environments. Although the high price and supply chain disruptions can pose threats to the product’s success, the company’s SWOT analysis indicates that iFeed is well-suited to its marketing environment.
Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning
Based on the demographic market segmentation approach, the target audience for the new product comprises parents and grandparents, as well as friends of families with babies. Hence, the most typical age range of potential consumers is 20 to 34 years (Korhonen, 2023). As of 2018, the baby bottle market in the USA was worth about $487.9 million. It is expected that by 2025, its value will increase to nearly $795.4 million (Petruzzi, 2022). Meanwhile, based on the loyalty approach, the product is likely to attract those who already own at least one Apple product.
The mentioned market segments are pretty attractive, as parents are usually eager to provide the best care and products for their children. Hence, they will most likely enjoy the idea of buying something that provides additional comfort for their babies and themselves, indicating the market segment’s accessibility, responsiveness, and profitability. They are also substantial and identifiable, as the number of people with babies is quite large, and it is easy to single out this segment. The new product targets pregnant women, families with newborns, and relatives of people who have had a baby or are expecting one. The competitive position iFeed will aim to achieve with these segments is to focus on emotional connection, innovation, and brand loyalty.
Marketing Mix
Branding Strategy and Promotion
The branding strategy for iFeed will align with Apple’s overall branding approach, appealing to customers’ loyalty and the company’s recognition as it introduces the new product to the market. In the promotion sector, advertising iFeed will pursue the push strategy. That is, the company will increase consumer demand by encouraging sellers to highlight its product rather than competitors’ products (Grewal & Levy, 2017) to push iFeed onto consumers.
The promotional mix for iFeed will include defining the target audience, creating ads, leveraging public relations, and employing sales promotion. Since the target audience has been set, the adverts will be aimed toward it, focusing on the loving and caring atmosphere in families. The company may consider including iFeed ads as part of a home accessories promotion.
The most viable public relations approach for iFeed’s promotional mix is a cozy, small conference for expecting families, where the products’ features will be demonstrated, and the products can be tried out. Such meetings can be arranged on the premises of maternal hospitals or other similar facilities. The unique selling proposition (USP) of iFeed is what sets it apart from competitors and makes it stand out. The product’s synchronization with other Apple devices, which enables the bottle to serve as a music box and a soothing tool, is iFeed’s main USP.
Distribution
iFeed will not be unique to Apple’s overall distribution channel choice. The company uses both direct and indirect distribution, enabling it to reach more customers. Direct distribution will be carried out through Apple stores, while indirect distribution will be through channels such as wholesalers, retailers, and resellers (Cuofano, 2024).
The institutions that make up the marketing channel include the manufacturer, wholesalers and retailers, online marketplaces and specialized baby stores, advertising agencies, and transportation and logistics companies. Additionally, healthcare facilities, regulatory bodies, and consumers are crucial elements of the marketing channel. The vertical marketing channel for iFeed will not change, as the new product complements the company’s existing product mix.
Price and Launch
It is expected that the quantity demanded of iFeed will not follow the conventional demand curve, as it is a prestige product. Hence, the new product, as well as many others offered by Apple, is an exception to the law of demand since its limited availability and high price create a sense of status and exclusivity. The costs and suggested price for iFeed are given in Appendix E. The launch approach for iFeed is a full-scale launch, as a soft launch would not provide sufficient product publicity. Steps included in the launch process are listed in Appendix F.
Performance Projections
Based on the 2018 report on the US baby bottle market and its projections, the overall market size in 2024 will be ~$744.15 million. The market size is expected to grow considerably due to the increased number of working and literate women, as well as the prevalence of diseases such as obesity and breast cancer. According to the report, the baby bottle market in the US is anticipated to grow by approximately $51 million annually (Petruzzi, 2022). Performance projections calculations for iFeed are available in Appendix G.
