I am surprised by Mrs. Mallard’s reaction when she learns of her husband’s death. Instead of dying from the shock, she experiences a sense of freedom and joy at living for herself. These unexpected events add depth to her character and challenge societal expectations. It makes me question the nature of her marriage and the societal standards imposed on women in the 19th century. It also prompts me to contemplate the complexities of human emotions and how individuals can react unexpectedly to life-changing news.
Chopin writes, “She said it over and over under her breath: ‘free, free, free!’” This passage is pivotal because it departs from the expected response and illuminates Mrs. Mallard’s internal conflict and the sense of liberation that accompanies her husband’s loss (Chopin). The repetition of the word “free” underscores the intensity of her unexpected relief and the depth of her longing for autonomy, a concept she may not have fully acknowledged until that moment.
Mrs. Mallard’s character is round and dynamic; she is not simply a grief-stricken widow but a woman who experiences a rapid transformation in the wake of her husband’s death. Through the exploration of her internal state, Chopin employs both “showing” and “telling” methods to build a realistic and empathetic character. We are shown Mrs. Mallard’s physical reaction to her newfound freedom—her relaxed body posture, her vision of life stretching out before her—and we are told of the thoughts and emotions swirling within her.
Her characterization also exemplifies motivated action. Her response to her husband’s death is plausible because Chopin has laid the groundwork for understanding Mrs. Mallard’s sense of confinement within her marriage. The plot thus far has been a rising action that culminates in the climax of her self-revelation.
Symbolically, Mrs. Mallard’s brief experience of freedom and the subsequent shock upon seeing her husband alive represent the oppressive nature of societal expectations for women during Chopin’s time. Mrs. Mallard’s death is the ultimate irony and tragic resolution to the story, as her freedom is abruptly and permanently taken away. Her heart condition, introduced at the story’s outset, becomes a symbol of her fragile state in a society that does not allow for the independence she so deeply desires and briefly tastes.
