Nonverbal communication and behavior can often convey more than words can. Learning the basics of this type of transmission of emotions and experiences helps to improve communication and interaction skills with other people. Moreover, individuals can gain an understanding of how best to act in the current situation. Therefore, this work aims to study the value of nonverbal behavior on the example of an excerpt from the series “Seinfed.”
Thus, an episode from the series “Seinfed” was chosen for analysis, in which the main character Jerome offers his hand and heart to a girl named Elaine. The first viewing of this video was made without sound to focus on the non-verbal ways that the characters use to express emotions. Hence, Elaine, when anxiety appears, begins to walk around the room in search of a snack in order to avoid conversation (TBS, n.d.). Jerome, in turn, actively gestures, which can be a way of emphasizing the importance of the information that a man wants to convey. After viewing, it was possible to come to the conclusion that the girl was not ready for such a turn of events, which is expressed by her sudden and active movements.
Thus, nonverbal communication in the studied passage has a manifestation in such concepts as body language and facial expression. The event presented in the excerpt takes Elaine’sElaine’s character by surprise which is expressed in her gestures and apparent bewilderment on her face. Jerome, through his facial expression, conveys inspiration for what he wants to accomplish. Therefore, with the help of the nonverbal communication of the characters, the audience has the opportunity to gain an understanding of the relationship of a man and a woman with each other.
