The major issue Starr County (Texas) faces is obesity. It has been declared that this county is the most obese in the state. Clearly, this is a serious issue that has to be solved, as obesity is associated with other numerous health problems including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, stroke, heart diseases, cancer, and so on. It is especially alarming as young people often suffer from this disorder and, as a result, young people have deteriorating health.
Remarkably, the disorder is preventable in the vast majority of cases. One of the major causes of obesity is an inappropriate lifestyle. Improper diet and little exercise lead to obesity in children and adults. Of course, if people have proper lifestyles, they can control their body weight and health conditions.
It is obvious that eating habits, as well as lifestyles, are adopted during early childhood and the family (or rather parents’) habits have a crucial impact in this process. However, the government and county leaders can contribute to the development of proper lifestyles. Thus, the county leader can or rather should launch a number of incentives aimed at training different groups of people. Adults, as well as teenagers, have to attend this training and learn about healthy lifestyles and ways to controls one’s weight.
The training should be available to everyone. It should also be in the curricula of educational establishments. More so, the county leader should also provide additional funds to schools to make meals served healthier.
Clearly, personal responsibility also exists and people are responsible for who they are. However, training and encouragement can help people as many Texans simply do not see different options and continue eating junk food even though they also go to the gym. The community has to help individuals to see various options that are available.
