Introduction

Researchers define obesity as a body condition that can bring unfavorable effects to an individual’s health. The current literature on obesity has shown that, for an individual to be obese, their body weight ought to be 20% more than their expected weight (Rolls, 2005). The current statistics have shown that obesity cases are high amongst the elderly. However, the main concern of this document is to discuss the diet recommended for obese patients.

Scholars interested in the issue of obesity among patients have highlighted the significance of being careful when choosing a diet for them. For instance, one of the scholars points out that the first step for successful treatment of such patients is fighting off their obesity. He further argues that the above can be achieved by reducing the proportion of calories intake (Rolls, 2005). For a patient to succeed in the process of reducing the calories intake, they ought to be knowledgeable on what constitutes a healthy diet. Even though the patient may be afflicted by a dissimilar ailment, it is necessary to control their obesity level since it can result in other diseases such as diabetes, as well as a rise in blood pressure.

Main body

The obese patient should limit his or her carbohydrates consumption. The main idea behind such a decision is an effort to control both the sugar, as well as the starch intake into the body system. The logic behind the idea to control the intake of such elements is because of their ability to increase the level of body fat. This is evident from the 2009 research conducted by individuals interested in identifying the key effects of consuming diets highly enriched with carbohydrates, fats, as well as proteins (Rolls, 2005). However, according to the results from their research, it is highly recommendable that obese patients should adhere to diets highly enriched with proteins, for a successful loss of weight. The same research pointed out that, for a patient to be in a position to reduce their carbohydrate intake, they must cut down their vegetables, cereals, as well as their fruits consumption. This contradicts the proposition of many studies championing for increased inclusion of such food products in an individual’s diet. Since the most significant achievement would be to cure an obese individual, it would be recommendable for them to adhere to the above despite the propositions of the literature.

Different research that aimed to establish the most appropriate diet for obese patients found out the Mediterranean diet was suitable for weight loss. The Mediterranean diet is comprised of plants products (Tangari, et al, 2010). These include vegetables, legumes, as well as whole grains. Although it can be difficult for an individual to survive on a diet, only comprising of the food products listed above, they must form the higher proportion of the diet for an obese patient. In addition, it deems necessary to supplement such food products with some meals of fish.

A different study that aimed to bring some light to the issue of the most desirable diet for an obese patient recommended the consumption of the liquid diet. The only sole difference between this and other diets discussed above is its usage under the physician’s approval. After the physician examines the patient’s health situation, they then recommend them for the most appropriate liquid diet to consume. This diet is appropriate for an obese patient since it contains a low proportion of calories responsible for increased body weight (Tangari, et al, 2010).

Conclusion

It is, therefore, evident that it is necessary to control the number of calories consumed by an obese patient. The discussion above shows that obese patient needs to be extremely careful when choosing their diet. For instance, their diet should contain low carbohydrates and fats, but the proportion of the protein ought to be high. In addition to increasing their proteins proportion, they also ought to consume a liquid diet since it contains low calories.
