The overlapping spheres of influence help explain the role of families, community, and school involvement in student learning. After reading the PowerPoint, I have learned different practices that can help better learning outcomes by involving family and community. For instance, it is important to assist families in establishing a home environment that supports children’s affairs as students. I can implement this by providing suggestions to parents suitable for their children in different grade levels. Another practice would be to organize workshops, prepare videotapes, and other simple instructions presentations on parenting to suit the development of children at each grade. As a teacher, parent education may include home visits during transition periods such as elementary to middle school (Epstein, 2019). Further, educators can organize various meetings to assist families in comprehending the effective collaboration between schools and families to achieve better learning outcomes.
The PowerPoint has helped me learn the importance of communicating effectively with the parents and the community. This can be achieved by designing effective communication modes for parents concerning school programs and other important practices. For instance, there should be language translators to help families and regular scheduling of phone calls, memos, and other communication channels. Another suggestion is to involve parents in making school decisions and ensure there are representative leaders for families in learning institutions (Ishimaru, 2019). Further, a teacher needs to provide details and crucial ideas to families concerning how to assist students in homework and conduct curriculum-related practices. The parents should be given schedules with activities that students will be required to complete within an academic year. Such preparations can be crucial in helping students learn with the support of family members through collaboration with teachers.
