The effects of plagiarism are detrimental for both students and research institutions. Plagiarism is a widespread issue that affects the papers of nearly all students (Ewing et al., 2017). For example, it can be a direct copy of someone’s material, a paraphrase without a proper citation, a combination of one’s idea and student’s text, and similar types of inappropriate academic behavior (Streefkerk, 2020). It is essential to uphold the standards of academic integrity for several reasons.

Nursing is a profession where ethical conduct is a crucial concept. Students who tend to cheat in their studies may have issues with being bound by strict professional codes in the future (Ewing et al., 2017). An alarming trend suggests that there is an increased percentage of students who do not perceive plagiarism on a smaller scale as improper behavior (Ewing et al., 2017). It is vital to ensure that evidence presented by an author is not plagiarized since if the material was misused, it would be impossible for others to trace the source of the issue.

Not only does plagiarism hurt students’ accomplishments, but it also decreases the quality of their works in the future. Authors are expected to publish their papers with no plagiarism whatsoever. Yet, if an article is discredited due to the usage of copied or paraphrased content, an author can not expect to be taken seriously afterward. This damage can further prevent students from publishing their academic papers in the future due to inadvertent plagiarism that might stem from inappropriate quotations and the lack of knowledge on referencing (Smedley et al., 2019). To ensure that my text will remain free of plagiarism, I use plagiarism checkers and keep track of all citations I add to the paper.
