Executive Summary

Public transport forms a hallmark for an effective transportation system of a Metropolitan area similar to Sydney. PMP Consultants Pty Ltd is the major service consultant company in Sydney. It provides services to many clients. This project report will help management consider appropriate steps in finalizing the project proposal by stating the technical, functional, and operational specifications.

Introduction

The automation of transport for NSW using an information project carried out within Sydney raises the major concerns of traffic congestion through establishing effective technologies, convenient, efficient, and attractive transport services. The services will encourage commuters to prefer bus services to personal vehicles. Due to this project, commuters will be able to possess trip cards.

Overview of the Project

The incorporation of an automated information system into the transport system ensures the integration of technologies, hence providing a synergetic change in the commuter world. The system is beneficial in terms of reducing time wastage and uncertainty, minimizing operational costs, fuel consumption and emissions as well as congestion in traffic, increasing user safety, enhancing accessibility of the transport system, environmental quality, traffic, and energy efficiency, and also economic productivity (Central Institute of Road Transport 2010, p. 77).

Measurable organizational values

Improved productivity

The users will improve their productivity time without time wastage at bus stops.

Reduced congestion

The dissemination of information to all stakeholders will initiate steps that will help users avoid areas of accidents and dense traffic.

Reduced travel time. The system will enable redirection of vehicles in case of emergencies, hence helping commuters reach their destination in the pre-determined time.

Reduced accidents

Increased training and two-way communication between drivers and operation colleagues will minimize accidents due to the utilization of incident management criteria in the automated system.

An efficient and effective public transport. The automated system will ensure effective transport management and real-time dispatch of information to passengers, regarding bus services.

Decreased emission levels

The number of vehicles will be decreased, hence reducing the level of emissions.

Increased satisfaction among tourists

The system will improve integration and coordination that will increase the number of tourists visiting the city.

Project Scope

This proposed automated public transport system will consist of such central components as a real-time passenger information system, core control station, and vehicle tracking system. Technologies to be involved include information and communication technology, Geographical Positioning System, communication subsystem, electronic display system, incident & emergency management system, operational & maintenance system. Services comprise reporting, streaming, database, archival, and GIS services as well as travel demand management.

System Development Life Cycle Alternatives

There are basic approaches to the system development life cycle with regard to information systems. One of the approaches is the traditional sequencing due to which the company can perform all the analysis followed by design and check on the installation logistics. Installation, analysis, and design occur at different stages. Another approach is the layered one, also known as an interactive approach.

Here, the installation, analysis, and design are performed in detail at a particular level and stage. From this point, further analyses are carried out at another stage. The traditional approach is most effective for smaller projects. Actually, it has no reflection on how systems go by. The layered approach reduces scrap & rework, enhances planning, minimizes risks, and improves quality (Bender RBT Inc, 2003, p. 56).
