Elements of a Good Presentation
Mistakes in Video 1, The Hidden World of Chili Peppers
The two videos watched during this class define what should be done and what should be avoided during a presentation. The elements of an effective presentation are missing in video 1.
A Mistake in the Introduction
The first mistake in video 1 can be seen in the introduction part. The tone used to introduce the subject of study is low. It does not capture the attention of the audience. Video 1 also shows that the presenter is not good at word articulation. His tone is low and he is also reading very fast. As such, it is not possible to hear some of the words.
Poor Graphics
In the graphical presentation section, mistakes can be seen in the type of images used. To start with, the images are not clear and lack any information. Good graphic presentations should be clear. Besides, they should be accompanied by words (Adam, 2015). The presenter is required to explain what the graphics show. However, in video 1, there is no explanation. Images and other graphic designs are supposed to be centered on the screen. Centering enables viewers from any corner of the room to see them. However, the first image of South America is positioned at one corner of the screen. It should be right at the center. The yellow pepper that the presenter uses in the explanation is small. Visual aids should be big and visible. The explanation given by the presenter is shallow. It seems like he is just reading through the paper in a rush.
Poor Pronunciation and Conclusion
In video 1, there is an incident where the presenter fails to pronounce a word but still moves ahead to the other part. A good presenter should be more concerned with the pronunciations to avoid misunderstandings. When he talks of the veins in the pepper, no one apart from him can see what he is doing. From a general perspective, one can say that he is not prepared for the presentation (Adam, 2015). The presenter is shabbily dressed and does not look official at all. The conclusion in video 1 is also poorly done. Better concluding words that capture the attention of the audience in a slow tone should be used.
Improvements made on Video 2
Good Introduction
Video 2 has a lot of improvements compared to video 1. The introduction is done perfectly by capturing the attention of the audience. In this segment, the audience is captured by putting them into the situation and asking them to imagine what is happening. The voice of the presenter is also audible, which is not the case in video 1. The presenter is well dressed and also assumes a good posture when explaining. As such, he captures the attention of the audience. The speech is clear and not in a rush. The presenter makes pauses where necessary to ensure that the audience digests the information. Video 2 takes 6 minutes and 53 seconds, while video 1 takes only 2 minutes and 39 seconds.
Good Graphics
In video 2, the projection on the screen is perfect (Alan, 2012). The images are centered and clear. In presentation two, several visual aids are used. The presenter goes ahead to project some on the screen for a better understanding of the presentation.
Good Pronunciation and Conclusion
The conclusion is good. The viewer can pick various quotes used to conclude the presentation. Good pronunciation is evident throughout video 2. The presenter does not skip any of the words (Alan, 2012). Video 2 is a good example of how a presentation should be done.
Presentation in the Video: A Question of Culture
The video is titled A Question of Culture: Orientalism as a Tool of Colonialism. The presenter explains more about Islamic culture. The video is informative and takes approximately 10 minutes and 46 seconds (Edward, 2008). The presenter describes the perception of most people towards Muslims. I liked the presentation for various reasons.
Why I Liked the Presentation
Tone, Posture, and Physical Expression
One of the reasons why I found this presentation appealing is the posture and the tone used by the presenter. The presenter takes an upright posture and projects his voice in such a way that any person listening to him can hear every word. The posture that a person takes when presenting something can affect audibility. It is the reason why public speakers are advised to take an upright posture (Edward, 2008). The eye contact of the presenter makes complements the physical expressions he makes. Such elements ensure that the audience is focused on the presentation. From the video, one can see that the presenter was prepared for the presentation. The preparedness is evident from the decent clothes he is wearing.
Good Graphics
The presenter uses good graphics and examples throughout the speech. He also ensures that the audience is aware of what he is showing by providing explanations between the videos and the pictures (Edward, 2008). I like the fact that he takes the time to explain different events. The moderate speed of his presentation gives the audience time to digest what he is saying. The presenter talks about the colonialism period and ensures that the pictures and the graphics used relate to that period (Edward, 2008). The use of clear pictures makes the presentation easy to understand. Also, it ensures that the audience is not bored. The above are some of the important aspects of a good presentation.
