Abstract
Psychological concepts may be found in every person, considering his/her behavior and attitude to other things. The paper is going to discuss social psychology, inner considerations of personal invalidity, and sexual aberrations on the example of Glen, who is showed from different points of view.
Social psychology, inner considerations of personal invalidity, and sexual aberrations are one of the main concepts of psychology, which are met in the piece of narration, which introduces Glen as the main character. These concepts are identified through Glen’s behavior and thoughts, attitude to some things and people, his collaboration in society. Psychology is the science, which investigates people’s minds and the considerations, which they provide according to this or that situation that creates significant features of their character.
Social psychology
Social psychology is the term, which describes the behavior of personality in the world, his/her correlation with other people in society. The general perspective of psychology that the concept falls under is behavioral, as the specifics of people’s behavior in society are described. Erikson was one of those, who studied this concept from the point of view of identity development, and “primarily focused on the mediating function of the ego and the role of the context in personality development” (Valsiner & Connolly, 2003, p.469). The part of the narration, where the discussed concept is met dwells upon the “finding himself [Glen]” in life. The reason is that Glen was able to meet his physical needs, but failed to find himself in society. For a long time, Glen was unsure whether the way, he had chosen, is right, which sphere to take up and how to behave in the hostile for his society. Glen tried numerous social roles and attitudes, but felt uncomfortable there, till he did not decide that carrier is of the highest importance for him.
Personal invalidity
The inner considerations of personal invalidity are one of the main problems in modern society. People are usually considered by others from the point of view of their own thoughts. People’s evaluation of themselves in their mind is often understated and this opinion impacts other people in providing their own opinion about the person. The inner considerations and their influence on other people’s behavior were studied by Freud in his “Psychoanalysis” when he investigated people’s motivations and behavior in reference to their inner thoughts. The passage, where this concept is used in the text deals with Glen’s assurance that he will never be loved by others and that he will never be able to reach his full potential. Glen’s inner condition was transferred to others on an unconscious level and they began to consider him as he considered himself. The general perspective of psychology that the concept falls under is cognitive. The person believes that he is unsuccessful and will never reach his aims, and continues to fail in reality. This cognitive theory and the influence of inner considerations on people’s opinions were proved by Freud to be in direct dependence (Lear, 2005, p.2).
Sexual aberrations
Sexual aberrations were studied by Freud, and the main consideration, which is discussed, is that all people in the world need sexual relations and should feel sexual satisfaction. Sexual relations are important, and the person who tells that sex means nothing for them tries to hide their complexes. The general perspective of psychology that the concept falls under is cognitive, as sexual relations and attitudes to sex are born in people’s minds. The part in the fiction, which introduces this sexual cognitive concept, is in the idea when Glen’s attitude to sex is described. Being abstinent from sex, Glen defies those, who do not hide their sexual attraction and, moreover, he angrily denies any interest in sex. The part of people’s lives, which is devoted to sexual relations, was detailed researched by Freud, where he stated that “the fact of sexual need in man and in an animal is expressed in biology by the assumption of a sexual impulse” (Freud, 2007, p.15). Freud was sure that all people’s thoughts and behavior, in this or that way still come to sex in any of its manifestations. People cannot live without sex and the refusal of sexual relations tells either about some complexes or about the psychological trauma, which prevents a person from sex on an unconscious level.
The concepts, which were noted above, that is social psychology, consideration of personal invalidity, and sexual aberrations are closely interconnected, even though they are considered from different perspectives (behavioral and social). The main issue, which relates to them, is that they belong to psychology and are described by psychological theories. Being investigated by different scientists, these notions are connected by their aim – to describe people’s minds and to understand the processes, which take part in the thinking and behavioral processes.
In conclusion, psychology is the science, which investigates people’s minds and the considerations, which they provide according to this or that situation that creates significant features of their character. Social psychology, consideration of personal invalidity, and sexual aberrations are all the concepts of psychological thought, which help both, to understand the character better and to make the opportunity for psychological classes participants to consider these concepts and describe them.
