Introduction
Today’s laboratory class was devoted to the practice of conducting various types of injections: Intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular. We were asked to administer several injections to the mannequin on our own under the supervision of an instructor. This practice was aimed at creating close to actual medical conditions. In addition, it is especially important that we were asked to take injection kit supplies home with us to rectify our mistakes. During the practical lesson, I was given many opportunities to discuss various issues and actions related to injecting a real patient with the instructor.
Feelings
Before the lab class, I experienced relatively mixed emotions, as they were associated with excitement and slight uncertainty about a new experience. While preparing and injecting the drug into the syringe, I thought directly injecting the mannequin would not be difficult for me. However, later I had to face the problem that the needle bends, which creates several challenges. Therefore, it seemed to me that working with real patients can cause unpleasant pain sensations. Despite this, I was able to discuss this aspect with the instructor, after which it became clear to me that much more injection administration practice is required since this does not happen when working with real patients. After practice, I thought about my actions again and wrote them down, which allowed me to gain more confidence.
Evaluation
During the experiment, it was especially good to find a place for injection for the Deltoid and Vastuslateralis. However, it is worth noting that I had to experience some difficulties with Ventrogluteal. This was explained by the fact that landmarking the injection site in this area requires extensive practical experience. It is necessary to visually form a triangle that will determine the wanted point of injection. However, it is worth noting that working with the instructor helped me solve the problems and questions that arose.
Analysis
In practicing the injection, I faced slight uncertainty since I constantly had to project what I was doing in the actual situation. This was reflected in the fact that I was not confident enough to do the necessary procedures and was constantly distracted by minor details. In my opinion, the reason for this is only a lack of practice and work with real patients. However, close interaction with the instructor allowed me to better consolidate my theoretical knowledge in practice. To improve the situation, it is necessary to devote more time to visualize the process using various videos or home practice. I believe that in the future indecision will disappear, as the process itself will become familiar and understandable.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it should be said that the introduction of various injections is, at first glance, a simple but complex matter. On the other hand, practicing helps to get rid of unnecessary thoughts and feelings of uncertainty about my actions. I managed to gain significant experience when interacting with an instructor who will help me in the future. On the other hand, it is necessary to devote even more time to studying additional materials and practicing so that this process does not cause difficulties.
To be ready to face this experience in the future, it is necessary to devote more time to additional practice. In particular, the difficulties encountered during the laboratory class related to the landmarking of the injection site should be considered. To gain more confidence, I plan to use the opportunities provided to me to practice this process together with my friends and family several times a week. This will allow me to gain the necessary experience to work with patients.
