Introduction
Commercial design refers to the planning, designing, and decorating spaces by a designer in areas of business premises and public works. It deals with layout and placement of walls, plumbing and power systems (Piotroweski, 2009, par 3). Residential design, on the other hand, refers to planning and designing spaces in homes where people live. It mainly deals with designing home offices, kitchens, bathrooms and home appliance design.
Comparing Commercial design with Residential design
Comparing Commercial and residential designs, it is observed that in both cases, there is creativity and innovation as they involve planning new contractions and renovating existing ones. Both commercial and residential design normally deals with areas that affect the public’s health, safety and welfare. In both cases, some codes are used for guidance like for instance designing spaces that are universally accessible for people of all ages and varying degrees of disability (Fisher, 2006, par. 4). Although commercial and residential designs are different specializations, both of them have some basic knowledge and skills. In as much as a designer specializes in planning homes, he/she should have knowledge, skills and abilities to design business premises. It therefore means that one should not limit himself/herself only to one specialization. Once architecture, one should have wide knowledge of both specializations so that he/she can serve any kind of a client. The purpose of commercial and residential designs is to solve problems and enhance the looks of the space.
This is achieved by proper planning and organization. Regardless of any kind of space, designs of both areas follow the same process. Both Commercial and residential design perform similar tasks like designs, budgets, engineering work and signing contracts.
Residential design entails the designing of living spaces. Accordingly, the professionals involved are committed to ensuring that comfortable and livable houses, apartments, or rooms are created. Residential design puts into consideration such concerns as family life, storage as well as functionality. It is important therefore that the future owner of a residential building engages the services of an interior residential designer. This is for purposes of ensuring that the materials, fabrics and finishes that shall be chosen for the building adequately cater to the tastes, preferences and lifestyle of the occupant. Unlike commercial design, residential design deals with people’s emotions. This is because a home is meant to be a place for people, having family and guests in mind. Designing spaces for residential homes should be more comfortable and emotional appealing. On the other hand, commercial design entails the designing of such business spaces as lobbies, offices and restaurants, amongst others. In this case, some of the considerations to take into account when designing commercial buildings include business equipment integration, traffic flow as well as customer comfort (Residential Interior Design, 2009, par. 3).
Evaluating layout of Commercial/residential buildings design
According to Douglas, (2002, p.13) the residential buildings are mainly composed of apartments, flats and dwellings. Their life span is normally longer with some having over sixty years. They are also not subject to adaptation over their service life. Due to lack of adaptability, residential buildings are subject to deterioration and legal restraint. According to Biddulph, in the design of the residential house, the front and back interface is of importance (2007, p. 45).The front normally faces the street while the back faces the private space. The residential should also provide surveillance that allows the inhabitants to observe human activities taking place. Lastly, the residential should provide for residential block structures which provide for the available space..on the other hand, commercial buildings are sad to have a shorter design life span. Such buildings are adapted easily as compared to the residential ones. Due to the various economic factors such as interest rate, inflations and changes in customer requirements affecting commercial buildings, the owners are forced to modernize them so as to stay in the market.
Conclusion
In conclusion, residential buildings are those which are constructed mainly for family use. They include flats, apartments and dwellings. An architect has the responsibility of designing the general architecture of the structure whereas the interior designer continues with the subsequent beautification. Commercial buildings on the other hand are structures that are aimed at enhancing business operations. An interior designer has to involve vast knowledge of specialization to suit the needs of the potential uses for the structure in question. In terms of the layout, the residential provide for the surveillance, front and back together with the presence of private block structures.
