Introduction
It is clear that it is necessary to speak the same language to be able to communicate, but now it is also obvious that cultural backgrounds (especially religious beliefs and mindsets) have an important impact on people’s ability to understand each other and help each other in the modern multicultural societies.
Modern multicultural society
It has been acknowledged that speaking the same language in a community (or/and in the society) is very important for people who have to interact through even this sociolinguistic tool cannot be enough as the cultural background of people can often become a serious obstacle for understanding and effective communication in different situations.
Numerous examples of hardships of immigrants and their children show that language is one of the most important tools to develop trust which is the basis of peaceful and fruitful communication through the cultural background of people often plays a more important role as even understanding of some words does not lead to an understanding of some concepts and building trust.
Experiences of Tan’s mother and Lia’s parents show that the modern world is divided into loads of micro-worlds where people do not understand each other and do not want to help each other as they are separated by language and their cultural backgrounds which make them see the world differently.
Hardships of Tan’s mother and Lia’s parents can be regarded as an illustration of the importance of speaking the same language which is not limited to speaking ‘perfect’ English but it also means to be able to understand the way different people see the world around them and to understand the spiritual part of other people’s universe.
Conclusion
The five thesis statements, written above, focus on the importance of understanding different people’s spirituality and their cultural backgrounds as well as speaking proper English which is necessary in the modern multicultural world, but some of the thesis statements are a bit general. Admittedly, different statements can affect the choice of arguments as some of them concentrate on language and cultural backgrounds, while others focus on the importance of speaking the same language and paying attention to cultural backgrounds concerning specific examples taken from the life of immigrants, so these statements are better as they are not too general.
To my mind, the fifth thesis statement is the most effective since it is expressive and comprehensive as it shows the importance of taking into account other people’s cultural backgrounds and has an exact reference to the readings which will be the basis of the paper.
